News All In 1968, the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) introduced the R rating because of the graphic violence that shocked young viewers in George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. In the aftermath of the Manson family murders of 1969, there was a hysteria about Satanists and the band Black Sabbath were accused of being devil worshippers themselves after the release of their 1970 debut.

Neil Young - Reflecting on the 50th Anniversary of “On the Beach”

Blog All Friday, July 19, 1974, during the dog days of summer, Reprise released Neil Young’s On the Beach. On the album cover (photographed by Bob Seidemann), Young is turned away from the listener, looking out towards the ocean, a Cadillac buried in the sand and a newspaper announcing calls for Richard Nixon to resign. Three weeks later the president left on August 9, 1974 (the same day as the Manson family murder of Hollywood actress Sharon Tate five years before on August 9, 1969).
