According to the Minnesota Department of Education’s web site, the Cannon Falls Schools’ Report Card shows an almost flat line of about 50 percent of the elementary students meeting proficiency in math and reading the past 5 years. Letter to the Editor: Our American history
“My concern is not whether God is on our side: My greatest concern is to be on God’s side for God is always right.” – Abraham Lincoln, America’s 16th president, 1861 during the Civil War until assassinated in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate spy for the Democratic southern states. On January 1, 1863, keeping his word, Lincoln, a Republican, issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves in 10 states not then under Union control.
The View From the Water
BY MARK LUND Imagine an early morning on a quiet Alberta lake. As you drift along watching the pelicans feed you soon realize that they are paddling in formation, herding the fish towards each other. These moments are unique to the experience of paddling on Alberta’s waterways.

When I was a teenager living in Northern California in the 1960s, environmental groups pressured the legislature into banning logging and brush clearing on government lands, thinking it would help the environment. (You may remember the spotted owl controversy.) Now we are seeing the consequences of these policies in incredibly immense and wasteful fires. (Sorry, spotted owl.) But rather than admitting the error and repairing it, they are erroneously blaming global warming.

Integrated briefs are becoming more commonplace, but there is still nervousness about the possibilities and pitfalls.
