THE BOOK OF WEALTH
The author believes that individuals need to look after themselves by being healthy and happy to create sustainable wealth… Mark Mobius strongly believed borrowing was never a good option, a big virtue learned from his father. This led him to work in local bars and clubs to keep his college dream alive. According to Mobius, real wealth is beyond money. It has intellectual growth, emotional strength, social connections and so on. Its the richness of your life as a whole which is true wealth.
Mental health is wealth: Ace investor Mark Mobius shows why this is true in his new book
From time to time, I have received emails from people asking me: “Mark, how can I become wealthy?” But in trying to answer that question, I have to assume that they are asking about wealth in terms of money. In other words, they are asking: “How can I get more money?” But do they mean that? The term “wealth” covers more than just money and includes all kinds of things like happiness, knowledge, health, fame, freedom and so forth.

Mark Mobius: India has done a better job than most other economies in terms of currency management
When we look at India, we need to separate sentiment from facts. The volatility of stock markets, not only in India but across the world, is a reflection of sentiment rather than hard facts. Many have the expectation that the world is entering a recession and general slowdown, so their market behaviour reflects those sentiments. These are short-term phenomena that always pass. Therefore, we are required to take a longer-term view.
Sri Lanka on the painful path to recovery
Gotabaya’s resignation is critical to getting Sri Lanka back on its feet. In fact, for Sri Lanka to get out of this mess, a complete change in the leadership is essential. There needs to be a radical change in the political structure of the country for confidence to be restored not only among the population but also among foreign investors and international organisations.
Currency effect will not be felt on equities: Mark Mobius

How are you looking at Indian markets?

Hong Kong is changing - it’s time to accept it
The Hong Kong security law draft now submitted at China’s National People’s Congress should not come as a surprise to anyone who has followed developments in the last twenty years. However, as someone who spent many years living and working in Hong Kong, enjoying the ease of doing business as well as the many freedoms and low taxation, one cannot help feeling some nostalgia for the “good old days”.

The Next Chapter
It is with mixed emotions that I’m leaving Franklin Templeton Investments, but I’m excited about the next chapter of my life and what the future will bring. It’s been a bittersweet whirlwind of activity after I announced plans to retire after more than 30 years with the company. You will definitely hear more from me in the future, but I plan to turn this blog over to the talented team of portfolio managers and research analysts at Franklin Templeton.
Emerging Markets Through The Years
As many of you may be aware by now, I announced plans to retire after more than 30 years with Franklin Templeton Investments, effective January 31, 2018. Before I share my final, parting words on this forum, I'd like to take a look back at how emerging markets have changed since I first began investing in the space.

China's Conundrum
New-year celebrations in the Western world gave way to concerns about China as its stock market opened 2016 with a loss, triggering declines in equity markets globally. The 7% decline in China's domestic A-share market on January 4 was enough to trigger China's new circuit-breaker system, halting transactions on the first day of trading in the new year and prompting government intervention to prop up stocks.
Back To Brazil
I visited Brazil in the spring of this year, but wanted to go back and explore more areas of the country. Brazil has faced some hard times but appears to be bouncing back from a prolonged recession, so I was interested to gauge the mood of the people and businesses there.

China Clears Way For More Foreign Participation
At this time of the year, smog in Beijing, China, can be overwhelming. Throughout the city this fog/smog prevents the sun from shining through. But, the pollution problems have not clouded financial activity. Encouragingly, we continue to see a further opening up of capital markets in China in addition to more regulatory surveillance. While the smoggy air deters me from walking the streets outside, the city's indoor malls are extensive.

Finding My Roots in Germany, and a Piece of Musical History
While emerging markets have been my area of focus for several decades, I also travel extensively to developed countries, too. It’s quite enlightening to see how once “emerging” countries still cherish their heritage. I also find it interesting to compare various areas of progress between the different markets and what sectors or industries are receiving the most attention. In some cases, it is surprising to see where emerging economies are taking the lead.
Eastern Europe and the Polish Surprise
My recent travels took me to Eastern Europe, where I had the opportunity to meet with colleagues and discuss the latest developments in the region. I thought I’d invite Greg Konieczny, who is based in Romania, to share some of his insights. Greg is chief executive officer Romania, and director of specialty strategies at Templeton Emerging Markets Group. Emerging Europe is a quite broad and diversified region.
Structural Growth Drivers Behind Emerging-Market Economies
My colleagues and I have been championing the message that emerging markets have changed—they are no longer just commodity plays. Old economic models are undergoing a transformation in many cases, opening up exciting new investment opportunities. Here, Carlos Hardenberg, executive vice president and managing director, Templeton Emerging Markets Group, explains how the changing consumer dynamic in emerging markets has driven the demand for new and innovative goods and services.
Croatia’s Many Cultural Ties
When I was asked to give a speech at an investment conference in Croatia, I was excited for a number of reasons. Many years ago, I had visited Chile and wanted to learn more about a mining company there. Its CEO happened to be a Croatian who had immigrated to Chile and became quite wealthy. At the time of our meeting in the late 1990s, we traveled together to a large Chilean copper mine and he showed me the entire operation.
Mark Mobius: Celebrating 50 years of ASEAN - Money Marketing
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. The regional cooperative was established in 1967, with Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore as founding members. Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Cambodia later joined. Back in 1967, the region was filled with strife, and the association was established to help bring peace, stability and prosperity.
Emerging Markets Third-Quarter Recap: A Stellar Rally
For our part, we continue to proceed with our value-oriented investment process, taking into consideration market sentiment. We believe it is important for investors to be globally diversified through portfolios that include exposure not just to South Korea or Asia but also to other parts of the world. We remain optimistic about opportunities among emerging-market equities in the current climate, while remaining mindful of potential risks.
China's Congress Convenes
This month, China's leadership kicks off its 19th Communist Party Congress, a meeting which sets the agenda for China's political, economic and even social path in years to come. More than 2,000 delegates from China's ruling elite attend the Congress, which takes place every five years. Xi Jinping, China's president and the Party's general secretary, is likely to score a second five-year term to continue his agenda.

Scoping Out South Korea's Investment Landscape
I've recently shared some of my views about rising tensions on the Korean peninsula as well as the political and business landscape in South Korea, which are often intertwined. While there are challenges and uncertainties in South Korea, we haven't so far let that deter us as investors. My colleagues and I are still finding many potential investment opportunities. I recently visited South Korea and took a look at some of them.

Business and Politics in South Korea
My recent travels took me to South Korea at an interesting time given mounting tensions with its neighbor to the north. My colleagues and I got a pulse check on some of the reforms taking place, including those related to the family-run conglomerate companies known as chaebols. I first came to South Korea in the 1970s, and politics have been contentious there as long as I can remember.

Tensions Rise on the Korean Peninsula
Some media reports indicate the Chinese could be reluctant to cut off trade completely for fears a North Korean government collapse could trigger a mass migration into China. Sanctions don’t just impact governments, they hurt ordinary citizens. If all the oil exports from China to North Korea stopped, some observers speculate Russia might take over that role. The Chinese also announced sales of liquefied natural gas and condensate oil to North Korea would be banned outright.
On Travels and Travails
As the focus of my work is emerging markets, I don’t spend a lot of time in the United States anymore, even though I grew up there. But like many people, I took a bit of time off this summer to enjoy a visit with family. We traveled to Mackinac Island in the state of Michigan, situated in Lake Huron. It was a unique experience for me in that it is the only island I’ve been on where there are no automobiles. The only transportation options are horse-and-buggy or bicycle.
