Two Newly Translated Sonnets of Petrarch
233 How fortunate I was there came to be from one of two all-time most lovely eyes, as I observed them dim and agonize, this faltering and dismal energy.
Preface to “Love and Death in the American Novel”
The cautious reader, approaching a book as thick and complex as this, has every right to expect some prefatory word from the author about what he is after, what he thinks he has done; and the author (if he is I, at least) is delighted to explain himself, to welcome the kind of audience he has all along desired, and to warn off the unsympathetic. This is not, in the customarily accepted sense of the word, an academic or scholarly book, though it is indebted throughout to works of scholarship.

Poem: From … AGAIN
Oct. 19, 2023, 5:02 a.m. ET This selection from Mark Nowak is the E segment of an abecedarian work — an enduring poetic form organized around the letters of the alphabet. Chaucer wrote an abecedarian, as did the ancient Hebrew poets of the Book of Psalms. Nowak’s abecedarian documents the political and actual landscapes of the United States in the 2020s. The schoolchild innocence of the alphabet is juxtaposed with the violence and instability of the historical moment.

Keep Your Dying to Yourself
During the Secret War, which the United States waged to stifle communism during the Vietnam War (or the American War as it is known to the Vietnamese), the CIA covertly recruited tens of thousands of Hmong men and boys as proxy fighters for its agenda in Laos, a country that a peace conference in Geneva had determined would remain neutral.
Poem
Developing, through ecstatic repetition, a theology of lostness. By Lisa Jarnot The schoolchild innocence of the alphabet is juxtaposed with the violence and instability of the historical moment. By Mark Nowak and Anne Boyer The mixed-up nature of life itself is the unforeseeable consequence of the mating of a good and bad time. By Buck Downs and Anne Boyer This is not some placid, ideal garden, but a real one — edgy, animate and bustling.

The Virus Has Captured the Means of Production
Image: Kate Winslet in Contagion In films such as Contagion, virology is often confused with the invisible workings of capital. Between 1918 and 1920, a strain of H1N1 flu infected 25 percent of the world’s population (500 million people) and killed between 1 and 6 percent (17–100 million people). The point of origin of that particular strain is unknown and probably unknowable. But its rapid global spread was enabled by the transport and communications networks of warring empires.
Holyoke Mass., an Ethnography
Jan 1, 2007 18 Min read time A short story. What promise. Incorporated in 1850, she was awarded medals and monikers: Birthplace of Volleyball, Queen of Industrial Cities, Paper City of the World. Of the world. Paper. Paper was like gold here. The paper mills, which opened in 1849, started everything. Twenty-five paper mills at its zenith. The population boomed, rising from 4,600 to 60,000 inhabitants from 1885 to 1920.
Solidarity Through Poetry
A year later And it’s just another page And the only thing they do right is wrong And Attica is a maggot-minded black blood sucker And the only thing they do right is wrong And another page of history is written in black blood And old black mamas pay taxes to buy guns that killed their sons And the consequence of being free . . . is death And your sympathy and tears always come too late And the only thing they do right is wrong And it’s just another page.
Solidarity Through Poetry

When Celes Tisdale led poetry workshops at Attica State Prison, soon after the 1971 uprising, some of the prisoners were still recovering from gunshots. Their writings demonstrates the power of poetry to help oppressed people heal from trauma and organize their political thinking. The Worker Writers School (WWS) is an experiment in solidarity.

Brazilian Democracy in Peril
On March 14, Brazil was shaken by the killing of Marielle Franco in Rio de Janeiro, where Franco served as a leftist city councilor representing the favela community of Maré. Franco had recently been named to head a commission investigating military abuses during President Michel Temer’s February “anti-gang” deployment in Rio. A human rights activist beloved by her community, Franco was also the only gay black elected official in the country.
The Audio Voice 169:
In this conversation, Martyn Humphries explains what lead NXP to develop this family of processors and the vast implications the platform might have not only for the obvious applications in smart speakers, media hubs, soundbars, and all the smart home devices that the company displayed in its massive exhibit in Las Vegas, NV, but also how all audio companies in general can leverage this "convergence of immersive sensory experiences fueled by voice, video and audio demands," to create a new...
Who Gets the Right to Stay?
Editor’s Note: This essay was first published in 2009 as part of The Case for Amnesty. It has been updated in light of recent efforts by the Trump administration to roll back DACA and further criminalize immigration. In the United States, the Trump administration is greatly increasing efforts to find and deport irregular migrants, even when they are people who have lived here peacefully and productively for many years and have American spouses and children.
