Biological insights into schizophrenia from ancestrally diverse populations
|
Abstract Schizophrenia and related psychoses occur in all human populations, with the highest rates of diagnosis among Black individuals and those of mainly African ancestry1. Decades of research have established a highly heritable and polygenic basis for schizophrenia, which is mostly shared across populations2,3,4. However, a recruitment bias towards European cohorts5 has led to discoveries that are poorly generalizable to African populations.

Edgar Wright Provides 10 Tips for Getting Your Movie Made
Edgar Wright, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, among many others, is one of my favorite directors working in Hollywood. He's got such a unique and exciting visual style, and his stories always pack a lot of heart. It's also clear that he loves movies and loves the process. So, when I saw him giving advice in a YouTube video, I knew it would be perfect here. The video below is packed with 10 tips from Edgar Wright.
Make Your Movie For an Audience of One
Written by Mark H. Rapaport During the dog days of COVID, Kimball Farley (who plays the title character) and myself would meet on Zoom from coast-to-coast to write the script for what would become the monochromatic, tragicomic tale known as Hippo. When we wrote the film, the guidelines we gave ourselves were straightforward: let’s write something we can make right now, with the actors we know, with the money we can get, and for the locations we have easy access to.
Hippo (2023)
An eccentric young man grapples with the reality of the world in which he lives. His adopted sister, Buttercup (Lilla Kizlinger), yearns for him, his father has passed away, and his mother, Ethel (Eliza Roberts), who’s been institutionalized more than once, is incapable of running the household. The young man is known as Hippo (Kimball Farley), and he’s trying to figure out life. I just don’t get it.

SafeUT is Utah's potential contribution to the gun violence solution
The senseless and horrific school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, has left us shaken and is a call to action. Mass shootings have a profound impact on communities where they happen and our country, leading to widespread grief, anger and fear, and a recurrence of trauma for the survivors of previous events. Any solution to this complex and seemingly intractable problem will require many components.

Transforming Utah's Mental Health Care
By: Mark Rapaport, MD | Jul 13, 2021 4:00 PM Although Utah can tout first-class health care and many worthy investments in the well-being of its citizens, we need to accept that our mental health care is inadequate. Tackling that deficiency is a priority for Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI). My colleagues and I confidently believe we can raise the standard of mental health care throughout the state—a challenge that is a shared vision by many.
