Sailors on Storms | Stories and Adventures Highlight the Bayview Yacht Club’s 102nd Port Huron to Mackinac Race
Storms swept across Lake Huron shortly after the start of the Bayview Yacht Club’s 102nd Port Huron to Mackinac Island Race. The 193 yachts have two courses to choose from and are divided into 14 Sections. They were all well prepared to race the entire length of Lake Huron starting off Fort Gratiot Lighthouse just north of the Blue Water International Bridge as they pointed towards Mackinac Island.
Sail Safe, Sail Fast | Island Welcomes Sailors from Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac
“Sail safe, Sail fast” are the words of wisdom and sound advice taken from the Chicago Yacht Club officials for the 117th Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust.

The lead up to the 38th edition of the America’s Cup in Napoli, Italy, has all the earmarks of the prolific English writer William Shakespeare’s best work and drama. It was in that beginning, 1851 to be exact, that an event graced with the “presence” of a queen became the holy grail of yachting. Taking place around the Isle of Wight, and as fate (and some local knowledge) would have it, the legend of the yacht America and its Cup was born.

“Nobody panics when things go ‘according to plan’ even if the plan is horrifying,” says Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight. “Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I’m an agent of chaos.” The SailGP fleet in front of the Statue of Liberty in New York.
Cognition and Anesthesia Exposure in Adolescent and Young Adult Retinoblastoma Survivors
1 Introduction Retinoblastoma (RB) is a malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumor that emerges from the developing retina and typically presents in early childhood [1]. It is the most common eye cancer in children [1] with approximately 300–350 children diagnosed each year in the United States [2] and a worldwide incidence of one in every 16 000 live births, accounting for ~8000 cases worldwide annually [1].
The British Empire Strikes Back in Abu Dhabi
SailGP rolled into Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates with many doubters and detractors as whether the weather would turn up for the penultimate Season 5 Grand Finale as 4 teams battled for the final three spots for a $ 2 Million Dollar championsh Published: Sunday, January 11, 2026 9:00 am By: Mark Reid SailGP rolled into Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates with many doubters and detractors as whether the weather would turn up for the penultimate Season 5 Grand Finale as 4 teams battled...
By the Numbers
Published: Thursday, October 23, 2025 10:00 am By: Mark Reid By the numbers, the Chicago Yacht Club (CYC) is celebrating its 150th Anniversary this year. Their Race to Mackinac, presented by Wintrust with 285 yachts hitting the starting lines just completed their 116th Race.
Why Angular Feels Like Corporate Dead Weight (And React Is the Leaner, Meaner Choice in 2025)
Press enter or click to view image in full size You’ve probably noticed it: teams still dragging Angular into every sprint like it’s some mandatory TSA checkpoint — while React rockets past with barely a hiccup. Here’s the cold, hard truth: if you care about speed, bundle size, community energy or just plain developer happiness, React leaves Angular eating its own dust. Think you need a massive, “enterprise-ready” framework to build modern UIs? Think again.
Race Pace: ‘Heartbreaker’ Finishes First in Slow Chicago Race to Mackinac
Slow is, as slow goes. Last year was the fastest Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust in history. This year, not so much. The start on Saturday didn't do the fleet any favors, as storm systems and heavy rain moved through, nothing severe, but by the time the turbocharged yachts hit the line, they literally floated across. It was a […]
Lights, Camera and Action!
Long before Hollywood started buying into SailGP teams, it was very obvious where the stars are. They are behind the wheels, in the cockpits, and on the trampolines of the incredibly fast, foiling and flying space age F50 catamarans reminiscent of “Formula One” on the water, but more like IndyCar on the racecourse.

The “Sort of Singlehanded North Bay Race” coming up this weekend on Saturday, April 26, allows you to bring a “ghost.” It’s not unusual for long-distance singlehanded racers to hallucinate while crossing oceans, but it is unusual for singlehanded races to actually have two people aboard. The reason the local Singlehanded Sailing Society allows this is to give first-time singlehanders some extra hands just in case they’re needed.
Oh, Canada!
In sailing equality, energy and excitement combined with equity on and off the water can take many forms. Sometimes in the most unlikely of places as when we think of sailing, we don't really think of Canada. We picture Newport, San Diego, San Francisco, the Mediterranean, Mexico etc....
GIPD Urges Vigilance with Colder Weather Arriving
Grand Island, Neb. — With temperatures plummeting over the next week, the Grand Island Police Department is wanting to remind residents that vehicle thefts typically rise this time of year. In fact, GIPD has received reports of seven stolen vehicles since Monday, December 30. They have since recovered six of the vehicles and have suspects for all seven of the thefts. However, it’s the nature of the thefts that is prompting this annual warning.
Grant Dalton's Kiwi Hat Trick
Like a family reunion you wish would never end, the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup is over. Now the speculation of when, where and who for the 38th edition begins. The past few weeks, like the blazingly fast foiling monohulls that “fly” over the course at warp speed, this event seemed to end as soon as it began. Barcelona, hosting the Cup races for the third time, outdid itself, and is certainly in the running for a fourth opportunity.

Not in December Richmond Yacht Club announced a change from the original schedule. “I want to make sure that everyone has gotten the update that our Small Boat Midwinters schedule has changed due to the holidays this year,” writes Robin Van Vliet. “The new schedule is: January 5, February 2, March 2 and April 6. As a result of this shift in the schedule, RYC will not hold a Big Dinghy in April.

As quickly as INEOS Britannia’s AC75 foiling monohull improved against ETNZ, it was of little consequence, as they weren’t able to land much of a punch. The Kiwis lifted the Cup for a third time in a row to complete the Three-Peat, or is it a Three-Pete (Burling)?
Kiwis on Match Point in 37th America's Cup
We are now on Match Point at 6-2 with Emirates Team New Zealand ready to pull off a historic hat trick of winning the America’s Cup three times in a row. Actually, they will have won the Auld Mug once and are now defending it twice, but that is a point of minutia for the historians to debate as the New York Yacht Club won the Royal Yacht Squadron Cup once and defended the Cup 23 times, but never “won” the America’s Cup.

Kiwis on the Cusp of Defending America's Cup
The first weekend of the 37th Louis Vuitton America’s Cup has produced very few surprises as Emirates Team New Zealand put the first three races against INEOS Britannia in the bag in dominant fashion. That said, Barcelona will certainly set records for fan attendance in the multiple Mixed Zones in the city, as the Catalonian capital makes a strong case to return as the host venue for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron if their team defends the America’s Cup.

The Puig (pronounced pooch) Women’s America’s Cup has produced fantastic racing. Some of the best women sailors on the planet are making their case for equality on the high seas, as they smash through that glass ceiling that has prevented many of them from being able to compete on equal platforms unless mandated.
The British Are Coming To Take the America's Cup
After our last-minute news story on here’s the full wrap of last week’s Louis Vuitton Cup final. It’s all on as the British are coming to an America’s Cup Match Final for the first time since 1964, when Sovereign got clocked by Constellation, representing the New York Yacht Club, 4-0 and wasn’t even that close. This time, though, INEOS Britannia genuinely surprised everyone with a noticeable increase in speed and performance both on and off the water.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Sausalito Boat Show, which runs this Friday through Sunday at Clipper Yacht Harbor. We’ll be there to meet and chat with our readers, and hand out the new October issue of Latitude 38 (there’s nothing like the real thing!). We’re also looking forward to checking out new sailboats from Beneteau, Bavaria, Lagoon, Dufour, Jeanneau, Excess and Hanse. Besides sailing on the Bay, Sausalito will likely be one of the coolest places to be on the warm weekend ahead.
Boots on the Ground in America's Cup Park, Barcelona!
¡Hola! It’s boots on the ground here in Porta Vela and America’s Cup Park, Barcelona, Catalonia. More breeze has finally seen its way here as yesterday’s first day of the Louis Vuitton Cup and the UniCredit Youth AC (UYAC)’s last day felt more like an average afternoon on San Francisco Bay.

Imagine going down to your slip on the Bay after 140-mph winds and a storm surge with water levels reaching 10 feet above normal. It’s hard to imagine in Sausalito or San Diego, yet that’s what residents of Florida’s Big Bend region are facing this morning due to Hurricane Helene.
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Defeats American Magic to Race In America's Cup Challenger Final
The clock struck midnight for American Magic as Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli bounced back from a catastrophic mechanical failure to eliminate the New York Yacht Club, without missing a beat. On a day where fickle, light winds were predicted, the Italians took charge from the get-go, even with a great start by American Magic co-helmsman Tom Slingsby.

A 105-ft motor yacht named The Admiral caught fire and sank in Marina del Rey on Wednesday night. The fire was reported to have started around 8:30 p.m. A crew from the Los Angeles County Fire Department fought the blaze while explosions were coming from the burning vessel. According to a CBS News report, two people had been aboard when the fire began, but both got off safely.
Puffs and Popcorn Make for Exciting America's Cup Racing
A day after some of the better sailing conditions off Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, which saw fantastic racing by the Unicredit Youth America’s Cup teams, the “grownups” got their turn today in a similar, but bizarre Mediterranean lumpy and shifty sea state, which ultimately saw Alinghi Red Bull eliminated, and American Magic survive for another day.

On Saturday, September 14, Day 3 at Rolex Big Boat Series, the J/99 Mymble’s bowsprit speared the trawler Anabel. Mymble was starting in ORC C. Anabel was serving as signal boat on the start line on the Treasure Island course. Anabel is South Beach Yacht Club’s race committee boat, and this is not the first time she’s been hit and damaged while facilitating yacht races. Video shot by race committee volunteer Mo Roddy Mymble retired from Race 6, and missed Sunday’s Race 7.

The St. Francis Yacht Club finished up hosting the International Knarr Championship (IKC’s) this past weekend on the Bay while in Southern California San Diego Yacht Club started hosting the Star World’s. Both are fleets with great history, competition and camaraderie. Racing in these classic non-spinnaker, keelboats is full of nail-biting competitive tension.

It’s time to get off the fence, organize the crew, and make sure you’re signed up for the 60th Rolex Big Boat Series. There’s room for more boats in the Classic division, ORC classes, and J/Boat and Express 37 one-design classes. The event runs September 11–15. Beyond great racing, fantastic September weather on the Bay, fun parties and trophies, there’s a chance you could take home a Rolex watch! There were 75 boats signed up as of this morning, and there’s room for you too.
Epic Mackinac Affairs
Published: Monday, August 12, 2024 11:10 am By: Mark Reid It was a year for the record books and the ages for both of the Races to Mackinac Island as the 100th Anniversary for the Bayview Yacht Club’s Race from Port Huron and the Chicago Yacht Club’s 115th Race checked off all the boxes with a pair of exciting and suspenseful, action-packed sailboat races which were nail biters from the beginning until their dramatic ends.
Daniela Moroz Takes 4th Place in Olympic Kite Sailing Final
The Medal Round for the Women’s Kite may have been a disappointment to Daniela Moroz, but she didn’t disappoint us, as she finished fourth, just short of a bronze medal. In the final race Moroz was partially done in by copping a penalty, later dismissed, rounding the penultimate mark as Great Britain’s Ellie Aldridge foiled away to capture the gold. France’s Lauriane Nolot took silver, and Annelous Lammerts the bronze.

In a nail-biting finish that wasn’t over until the last jibe, just ahead of the Swiss and British at the line, the American 49er team of California’s Hans Henken and Ian Barrows captured the 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medal. The USA medal drought has been excruciating, and in today’s Men’s Skiff final it took Henken/Barrows the entire race of fighting and clawing to finally break through and claim a place finish for the bronze.
100 Years of Bayview Memories
The 100th Bayview Mackinac Race presented by National Fleet Services is a wrap as Peter and David Askew’s Great Lakes 52 Wizard barely edged Chris Duhon’s Mockingbird by a mere nine seconds over the original 1925 235-mile course. After a delay of more than an hour and a half Saturday due to a lack of wind, the record fleet of […]
A Memorable Chapter for Storied Yacht Race
The 115th edition of the Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust has added an historic chapter as race records were shattered in near optimal sailing conditions. Maverick, an 80-foot Alan Andrew’s design owned by Sanford Burris, William and Ward Kinney from Cleveland, Ohio, broke Roy Disney’s 2002 record of 23 hours, 33 minutes, and 34 seconds on […]
What in the America’s Cup World?
What used to be an America’s Cup “wingding,” with a focus on winged keels and bulb shapes, has turned into new AC75 boat launches that range from “that looks odd” to a “where did that come from?” bizarre hull shape from Mars, as six new designs have come our way over the last few weeks.

Yes, this is an America’s Cup year. Much has changed since the era of AC foiling started more than a decade ago with the 2013 Cup on San Francisco Bay. Ellison and Coutts have moved on to their SailGP league while the Kiwis are back in the role of Defender.
America's Cup Patron and Hall of Famer Lucy Jewett Passes
San Francisco lost one of its grandest matriarchs just before Christmas. Lucille “Lucy” McIntyre Jewett passed away peacefully at the age of 94, in her Pacific Heights home. Jewett was passionately and deeply involved with not only sailing and the America’s Cup here in the Bay Area, along with her late husband George “Fritz” Jewett who died in 2008, but also with her other love, the San Francisco Ballet. Together with Fritz, Jewett supported both of her passions financially, on many occasions.

The California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey was destroyed by fire on Monday night, leaving members stunned and in shock. Firefighters arrived on the scene moments after they received a call at around 11:30 p.m. Despite the station’s being only a block away, the two-story building was engulfed by the time they arrived, the L.A. Times reported. Multiple units were called in to help contain the blaze in which two firefighters were injured.
The America’s Cup World’s “Away” Series
The NEOM America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) paid a visit to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The event itself was raced in AC 40s as opposed to the full-sized Cup Class monohull “foilers” that will used for the America’s Cup selection series and the Match final, which will be sponsored once again by Louis Vuitton. Ultimately this event will have little or no effect on what happens in the actual America’s Cup next year in Barcelona, Spain.

Is it ever too late to announce Bay Area sailing champions? Way back at the end of September, we received news that San Francisco Yacht Club F18 racer Charles Froeb and crew Matthieu Marfaing had won the F18 North American Championships in Burlington, Ontario. The beach-cat world was practically invented in California with Hobie Alter’s Hobie 14 and 16, and small catamaran racing remains popular with a smaller but very dedicated group of catamaran sailors.
SailGP Team USA Announces New Ownership with New Skipper Taylor Canfield
Seismic changes have radically altered the SailGP landscape just days before the next event in Dubai, UAE. Team USA has announced a change in ownership, just as CEO and driver Jimmy Spithill broke the news that he will be forming a new team based in Italy, where he currently is returning co-helmsman on Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s America’s Cup team.
