Illustration by Matthieu Bourel. Some founders call ADHD an entrepreneurial superpower. But reality is never that simple. By the time he’d turned 39, in the spring of 2007, Mark Suster was a doubly successful entrepreneur. A Philadelphia native with a University of Chicago MBA, Suster had worked for Accenture around the globe for eight years, and then launched, in 1999, BuildOnline, an Ireland- and U.K.-based software company that enabled collaboration in the construction industry.

It wasn’t always like this and frankly it took a lot of joy out of the industry for me personally. What happened?

Last year marked the 25th anniversary for Upfront Ventures and what a year it was. 2021 saw phenomenal returns for our industry and it topped off more than a decade of unprecedented VC growth. How You Can Achieve a Step Change in Your Fitness Before Summer
Just 21 months ago I couldn’t have jogged 2 miles in under 20 minutes and now I can run 3 miles in 21 minutes or more to the point I can pretty easily run 7.5 miles in an hour. I’m not super human and while I’m a decent athlete I wasn’t born with super genetics, extra doses of motivation or an unusual ability to tolerate suffering.
There’s Still Time to Commit to Your 2021 Health & Fitness Plan
It’s March 1st as I write this*. The year is two months in. Seems like just a moment ago it was New Year’s Day and we were all committing to our better selves for 2021 as so many of us do. It’s been a tough year for people around the world with the pandemic, work stress, crazy elections and uncertainty. Anybody would forgive you if your plan slipped. Still, it’s March 1st. Let’s get going.
Business Leaders Spoke Up After the Capitol Riot. Will Their Voices Remain Strong?
As a mob stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, Hunter Walk, a partner at seed-stage venture fund Homebrew, tweeted: "don't be putting Jared Kushner on cap tables when this is all said and done." Walk's call to peers to not accept money from President Trump's son-in-law got nearly 200 retweets, many of them by other investors.
How Manchester City are improving in possession
“One of the main things that I remember from being young was a piano. In the middle of the living room, because my father was playing piano. A lot, a lot. He was playing classical music. One piece of classical music, it’s like sentences. It’s like you’re reading — it’s like a poem. You have the first sentence, the second, the third, etc. And when you want to repeat it to make it perfect, you take one sentence and repeat it a million times until it’s just a perfection. It’s the same with tennis.
OK Whatever Stickers and Slides Travel the World For Viral Campaign
Jessie Schiewe is a journalist in California and the editor of a new online publication dedicated to weird news called OK Whatever. She ordered up a matte label sticker sheet in an 8-bit branding style with the names of her publication and website. She used them as branding on Kodak slides that she then sent around the globe as part of an innovative, yet vintage, organic advertising campaign for OK Whatever.
A superhero story
More words have been wasted on Donald J. Trump than he ever deserved, but I couldn’t help getting one last Big Take in before he’s out of power: Many of his followers believe Donald Trump is an actual, real-life superhero. This is not an exaggeration.
How I Gamified My Own Brain to Lose Weight & Improve Fitness
Socially distant hiking in Sedona (we drove there) I recently wrote about my weight-loss journey over the past 18 months where I lost 65 pounds without a fad diet and returned to my college weight. If you want to get in better shape and haven’t read that you might start there. I separately wrote about some food plans I use.
Stop Trying to Catch Lightning in a Bottle
I'm sure you've all heard the saying derived from Voltaire, "Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good," which in a way is encapsulated in the lean start-up movement and the ideology of shipping a "minimum viable product" (MVP), and then learning from your customer base. Or to borrow a simple life lesson from Gretchen Rubin: I think about this topic of perfection being the enemy of the good often. Because I live in start-up land where everybody is a perfectionist.
The quantity of money and its velocity of circulation
Photo by Charles Deluvio on Unsplash The so-called quantity equation is an essential foundation of the prevailing economic doctrine. A highly questionable one! The ideas of a circulating money supply and a connection between this money supply and the level of the price level result from an idea in which all money consists of a clearly defined amount of cash, e.g., in the form of a certain and limited number of gold and silver coins.

The Singularity Estimator
The completion of the singularity estimator was a day dedicated to celebrations. Kurt Mcatrick’s team of ingenious scientists, programmers, mathematicians, and engineers, who had been handpicked from across the nation, now had a new set of goals to accomplish. Kurt had called a toast; his team was exhausted, burnt out from the series of crunches corporate had required for the release of their cutting-edge, highly sophisticated artificial intelligence software.
Gone viral: What happened after I posted that hiking tweet
Hi, I’m Samantha, the author of an unreasonably viral tweet about love. I shared it on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020 and was shocked to receive 1.3 million likes in just under 48 hours. You may have seen it. It’s this one: To respond to the questions and comments I see most often: Yes, this story is true. Yes, that man is a web developer.
My Top 10 Podcasts of 2020
If you’re (un)lucky enough to be on one of the half dozen instant messaging groups I’m active on, you’ll know I have a habit of bombarding friends with podcast recommendations. While some people spent all their time during the pandemic at home learning how to bake or picking up a hobby, I spent mine consuming a vast amount of podcasts while in the middle of various home improvement and house cleaning initiatives.
20 Pieces of Advice from 2020
Well. This has felt less like a year in measurable increments and more like a series of grim revelations, folding endlessly into each other like a giant, ominous wave. 2020 is technically over, but it feels like we’re still waiting for the wave to break. Waiting for closure, or something. This is my fourth January making and sharing a list of what I learned in the previous year.
Reflections from 2020
Ok. So 2020 wasn’t what we all expected it to be…. Many of my new year's resolutions/goals from last year involved traveling to different countries to spend time in nature and attending my favorite conferences in person. I couldn’t make those happen, but I’m still happy with the way that 2020 turned out. Instead of looking outwards, I took a lot more time working to work on my own personal growth and development as opposed to focusing on optimizing external metrics.

Malleable C2 Profiles and You
Like most defenders out there today we keep hearing and seeing CobaltStrike used by actors. I wanted to share some notes on some back of the napkin research I’ve been doing related to it in hopes that it sparks interest in others to begin investigating more. It wasn’t until about 2 years ago I realized how powerful CobaltStrike is. If I am this late, I can’t imagine how far heavily funded adversaries are in generating their toolsets.
DOOMSDAY
DOOM’s brother DJ Subroc, a fellow member in his group KMD, died tragically after a car struck him on a freeway. Just recently, DOOM buried his son Mali at the age of 14. As an otherwise private man, his personal life was pretty much unknown to many of his fans. But instead of personifying the villainous madman that he played on stages and albums most of the time, he was clear in his dedication to family and his openness toward loss.
Who Shines on Sunday? Evaluating Professional Golf Final Round Performance from 2016 to 2020
It is the first week of 2021 and the PGA Tour is back, whether are ready for it or not. But before we get into the weekly rhythm of the Tour and professional golf in a new year, I wanted to look back at how the best players in the game have performed when they have a reasonable chance of winning over the last five seasons. Who has outperformed expectations on Sundays and who has underperformed? Who has been most unlucky? Can we finally answer the long-running DJ Pie vs. Soly debate on Tony Finau?
The Top Albums of 2020
106 Albums That Got Me Through This Uniquely Challenging Year In 2020, I listened to over 300 newly released albums, and actually I lost track —hmm, I must have been tired this year—and the final count was almost certainly closer to 400. That means that I listened to even more new music than last year, which is to say: far too much, again. So again, like last year, I will now recommit to spending more time on old favorites. (Maybe I can cut it down to 250 new albums?
The Invisible Lion In The Heart of Africa
Is it really that simple? Photo courtesy: Peter Kvetny Nearly fifty-five years ago on this day, the Republic of Rhodesia declared independence from the British Crown. Rhodesia’s Prime Minister, Ian Smith, became the first and only white colonial leader of Rhodesia. The Republic of Rhodesia lived an extremely short life, which was viewed by the United Nations as complete outcasts. They however lived existence for about fifteen years, before promptly dying.
4 años escribiendo una newsletter: show me the money 💶
3,000ish quite personal words about 2020
A new year is more than just another tally scraped through the Live, Laugh, Love print of the prison wall — it’s a time for introspection. Many see the festive perineum, the stinky seam connecting the jingling bells and violent fireworks, as a platform for rebirth. After a month of hard lining cheese and gin, they suddenly see and hate the amorphous vice vacuum they’ve become. As if there was any other option.
