The Smallest Window on the Sun

Here's a number worth sitting with…. six millimetres. That's the diameter of a new optical component developed at the University of California San Diego that could fundamentally change how future space telescopes study the Sun. It’s even smaller than your little fingernail and it might be one of the most significant advances in solar observation in a generation. The component is called a metasurface polarisation grating.

Reading the Galaxy's Past

Here's something that puts the scale of the universe into perspective. When you look at a photograph of a spiral galaxy, the beautiful glowing disc you see is only part of the story. Surrounding it, stretching out far beyond those spiral arms, is a vast spherical region called a halo. It is mostly invisible. It contains dark matter, hot gas, and the scattered remains of smaller galaxies that were torn apart by gravity billions of years ago.

The Shape of a Black Hole

Here's something that might stop you in your tracks. Black holes have a temperature! Just think about that.. We are not talking about the temperature of the material swirling around them, that’s just superheated gas. The black hole itself, the empty region of distorted spacetime, radiates heat. It was one of Stephen Hawking's most startling insights, and it opened up a deeply strange question.. If black holes have temperature and entropy, do they also behave like ordinary matter?
