Americans Can Still Come Together on Immigration. The Compromise We Need.
As a candidate, Donald Trump promised to secure the border and remove criminal aliens from U.S. soil. Back in the Oval Office, he has delivered and then some. President Trump should claim his win and strike a broader immigration deal in Congress while it is still possible.
Trump just fired 6,700 I.R.S. workers in the middle of tax season. That's a huge mistake.
If you were to ask the top chief executives in the world to name the best strategy to attack waste in their organizations and balance the books, there is one answer you would be very, very unlikely to hear: Take an ax to accounts receivable, the part of an organization responsible for collecting revenue.

Proper IRS Modernization Will Have Long-Lasting Positive Impact
Flush with funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, the IRS launched major initiatives to ramp up enforcement activities and make much-needed improvements in taxpayer services. These efforts depend on hiring and training tens of thousands of additional employees, itself a daunting task. Equally important will be modernization of the agency’s technology infrastructure and successful development of new systems capabilities.
The IRS Needs to Spend Its New Cash Hoard Carefully
About the author: Mark W. Everson is vice chairman of Alliantgroup, a provider of specialty tax services. He served as IRS Commissioner from 2003 through 2007. The Internal Revenue Service finds itself flush with money, an unfamiliar position. Persistent operational problems at the agency and controversial enforcement provisions in the narrowly passed Inflation Reduction Act place the IRS under the microscope and in the middle of America's rough-and-tumble politics.

Mississippi needs to improve access to mental health services. Here's what can be done.
I have the privilege of serving on the board of Gulf Coast Family Counseling, a small nonprofit which provides counseling services to individuals, couples and families. We serve the insured, but — with the support of the United Way — also the under insured and uninsured. There is always high demand for our six therapists, and never more so than over the course of this past year.
Virtual Learning Is Leaving Students Behind. Time to End It.
Text size Sam Wasson/Getty Images Mississippi schools start early. We are already 20% of the way through the academic year. The devastating impact of a prolonged absence from the classroom is now known. Also increasingly clear is that distance learning does not meet the needs of many of our most vulnerable students, who must be in the classroom to have any meaningful chance at success. My son Oliver is a seventh grader in the Pascagoula-Gautier School District.
ROENICK TO UNION: I’M SORRY
By Mark Everson March 2, 2005 | 5:00am TORONTO – Mutiny averted. Even loose cannon Jeremy Roenick apologetically jumped back aboard the Good Ship Goodenow, still headed who knows where, just more uniformly. Roenick yesterday admitted exclusively to The Post that he blundered publicly in the final weeks of NHL labor negotiations before Commissioner Gary Bettman cancelled the NHL season last month.
IRS needs new technology so taxpayers pay their fair share
As the nation plunges into an unsustainable financial morass, essentially spending four dollars for every three dollars it collects, the government confronts a daunting choice. Congress must be willing to significantly raise taxes, drastically cut spending, or some combination of the two. So far it has proven incapable of crafting solutions to address our fiscal challenges.
ROBINSON RETURNS TO HELP OUT DEVILS
By Mark Everson May 27, 1999 | 4:00am Attempting to shore up one area in which they were beaten by the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs, the Devils yesterday rehired Canadiens Hall of Famer Larry Robinson to be co-coach under head coach Robbie Ftorek. Now the coaching staff mirrors the team – a deep group of highly competent professionals that lacks a leading genius or star. Now Ftorek must overcome questions that will arise of whether the Devils would be better led by Robinson.
Challenges for the new IRS commissioner
After almost a year without a confirmed IRS commissioner, on October 1 Charles Rettig took office as the nation’s 49th commissioner of Internal Revenue. The post dates to the Civil War and the agency has had its ups and downs over the decades. Recent years have been tough. Mr. Rettig finds himself with both challenges and opportunities; a good start will be critical. Having held the job as the 46th commissioner, here are a few observations.
Keep the White House away from the IRS
There is a move afoot to give the White House a formal role in the promulgation of tax regulations which for decades have been written and issued by the IRS and the Department of the Treasury without coordination with or review by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Each of us has worked as a staff member in the Executive Office of the President and held senior tax positions at the Treasury, under both political parties.
Republicans just bought the IRS
After nine years of a contentious relationship with the Internal Revenue Service, Republicans find themselves in the uncomfortable position of needing the IRS to deliver on tax reform. The stakes are high. In 2016 there were 30 percent more individual income tax returns processed by the IRS than votes cast in the presidential election. And execution matters.
Presidential hopeful Mark Everson wants DOJ to investigate Volkswagen
The brazen criminal acts of Volkswagen call for a swift and decisive response: criminal prosecution of those responsible by the United States Department of Justice. As a former regulator and one who has toiled in the private sector in both industrial and service businesses, I am shocked by the deliberate fraud of installing a “defeat device” to deceive consumers and governments alike about the emissions and performance of Volkswagen automobiles.
Why I Cannot Support Trump
In March 2015 I launched a long-shot campaign for the presidency. I ran on a platform of tax and entitlement reform; increased accountability for Wall Street; national service; and a single term for the president. On immigration I advocated secure borders and stronger interior enforcement. I called for reinforcement of the American tradition of assimilation — having lived in France and Turkey, I know it is essential if we are to beat radical Islam — and thus a path to citizenship.
DEVIL HEAD GAMES - REPORT: MOGILNY CLAIMS HE SUFFERED CONCUSSION
It just wouldn’t be a Devils season without a concussion controversy. A report is surfacing that another dispute over a head injury immediately preceded Lou Lamoriello’s waiver and demotion of Alexander Mogilny in January. The report claims the two “discussed” at high volume the scratching of Mogilny on Jan. 3, the date Patrik Elias returned to the Devils’ lineup from hepatitis.
DEVILS PLAYING POSSESSED ; SIX-SHOT SHUTOUT OUSTS TORONTO
Devils 3 Maple Leafs 0 It’s not idle dreaming, now. In shambles two scant months ago, these Devils who couldn’t even win a round as regular-season conference champs the past two years are finally running at glory again. They believe they can win the Stanley Cup. “We’re halfway,” said Scott Stevens, also halfway to a Conn Smythe Trophy after the Devils advanced to the semifinals, eliminating Toronto with a record-setting 3-0 masterpiece in Game 6 at the Meadowlands last night.
