Judging by the soaring stock market, investors ostensibly think the economy is doing great. Stock prices briefly took it on the chin when the conflict with Iran broke out nearly two months ago. However, they have since rebounded in anticipation of the hostilities winding down and recently hit record highs. Of course, the stock market isn’t the economy.

What Is the Vicious Cycle Index?

The Vicious Cycle Index (VCI) is a labor force–adjusted version of the Sahm Rule that modifies the unemployment rate to account for changes in labor force participation, providing a clearer signal of recession risk when participation is shifting. Recall that the Sahm rule holds that the economy is suffering a recession if the 3-month moving average of the unemployment rate increases by more than half a percentage point from its lowest rate in the preceding 12 months.
