Carmel Parents Jazz Ensemble set for Gazebo stage

The Carmel Parents Jazz Ensemble is ready for its biggest gig yet. The group will perform at 12:30 p.m. July 3 at the Gazebo Stage at CarmelFest. So far, it has mostly played at senior living facilities. “The members are all very excited about the opportunity to perform for the local community,” ensemble member Kevin Seibert said. Seibert, 58, a vice president at Eli Lilly who plays alto saxophone, said the group started in January 2024.

Justin Bennett has long admired the Noblesville High School girls basketball program. In May, he took the reins after Donna Buckley resigned after 18 seasons. Under her leadership, the Millers won four sectional titles and the Class 4A state championship in 2022. “What was attractive for me was, one, the pedigree and competition of being at Noblesville High School, and the challenge of helping sustain or help enhance the success that they’ve had on that girls side of the program,” Bennett said.

Carmel Pride features ‘RuPaul Drag Race’ contestant

There will be a special guest during Carmel Pride’s Sunset Drag Showcase this year. Carmel Pride runs from 1 to 8 p.m. June 28 at Carter Green. Patrick Armstong’s wish was to see Cross perform live with a longtime friend, Carmel resident Traci Runge, by his side. Armstrong is in hospice care at Morning Light in Indianapolis. Morning Light’s Making Memories Program’s mission is to make wishes come true for its terminally ill residents.

Carmel High School duo falls in doubles final

It was nearly a perfect tennis season for Carmel High School seniors Maddie Littell and Gabby Hall. The duo helped lead Carmel to an IHSAA team state championship June 6 and then reached the state doubles final June 13 before suffering their only loss of the season. Jasper senior Adaysha Smiley and sophomore Stella Knies topped Hall and Littell 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). The CHS team finished with a 22-1 record, and Jasper ended with a 26-2 mark.

Folk trio I’m With Her set for Palladium show

Singer-songwriters Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan have collaborated to form a powerful folk trio. The musicians, who all have had success with other projects, formed I’m With Her in 2014 and released the album “See You Around” in 2018. A single from that release,“Call My Name,” won the 2020 Grammy for Best American Roots Song. The group’s second album, “Wild and Clear and Blue,” was released in 2025.

Midwest Academy, which serves students with learning differences such as ADHD, autism and language-based processing challenges, is taking 21 students to the Arts for Autism, a one-night benefit performance June 22 at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City. Madelyn Steurer grew up watching the Miss America competition each year with her grandmother. She thought last year was her final Miss Indiana competition, but then organizers raised the age eligibility from 27 to 28. So, Steurer will get to participate in the event a third time when it is presented June 17 to 20 at STAR Bank Performing Arts Center in Zionsville. She was a Miss Indiana contestant in 2018 and 2025. Steurer qualified by winning the Miss Capital City title.

Nichole Schmidt experienced every parent’s nightmare when her daughter went missing. Travel vlogger Gabby Petito, 22, was killed by her fiancé, Brian Laundre, while traveling across the U.S. in a van. The trip began July 2, 2021, and Petito disappeared Aug. 27. Laundrie drove the van home to Florida and wouldn’t answer questions about her whereabouts. He later died by suicide a few days before Petito’s remains were found Sept. 19, 2021, in Wyoming.

Debbie Hughes has a vision of regular comedy shows in Carmel. She founded Carmel Comedy Club, which will open at 7 p.m. June 27, at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way. Dobie Maxwell is the headliner while Hughes, known as “Lady Wisecrack,” and Indianapolis comedian Chris Cline will be the opening acts. Cline, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was the 2023 recipient of the NFL Salute To Service Award. He helped veterans work through trauma through the power of comedy. The Greyhounds topped Culver Academies 15-11 May 30 in the Indiana High School Lacrosse Association Class 2A state championship game at Brownsburg High School. It was the fourth consecutive year Carmel has been in the state championship. The Greyhounds won it in 2023. This is Allen’s third year as head coach.

The Carmel Symphony Orchestra’s new music director is certainly no stranger. David Commanday will return to the CSO as music director for the 2026-27 season. He previously served as music director for the 2023-24 season, but an agreement couldn’t be reached for the next season. The CSO has used guest conductors the past two seasons. By mutual agreement with the CSO board, Anne Marie Chastain resigned as executive director in May 2025. “I feel great about coming back,” Commanday said.

Retired minister Jerry Zehr examines the role of sacred rebels in society. To Zehr, sacred rebels use their voice to pursue justice and equality in society. The Carmel resident’s “Sacred Rebel: Fierce Love in a Fearful World” will be released at a book launch event from 2 to 3 p.m. May 31 at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 425 E. Main St. “This won’t be a traditional kind of a book talk,” said Zehr, who served as Carmel Christian Church lead pastor for several years.
