Abstract Electrolyzer architectures using bipolar membranes (BPMs) to convert alkaline aqueous carbonates into hydrocarbons are a potential solution to overcome limitations of conventional carbon dioxide (CO2) electrolyzers. We present comprehensive process designs, simulations and a techno-economic evaluation of integrated electrolysis-based systems (from CO2 capture to product separation and stream recycling) for the production of ethylene from carbonates.

One-Pot Mechanochemical Hydrogenation and Acetylation of 4-Nitrophenol to 4-Aminophenol and Paracetamol The mechanochemical hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol was examined in a ball mill reactor. Hydrogen gas flows through the reactor at ambient temperature and pressure in the presence of Pd/C catalyst and acetic anhydride. Under optimized conditions, simultaneous hydrogenation and acetylation in one pot increased paracetamol selectivity by avoiding undesirable side reactions of 4-aminophenol.

Every day, the desalination industry in the contiguous US rejects about 2 billion gallons of brine (or 7.8 million cubic meters). California, Florida, and Texas are responsible for rejecting more than 70% of the total desalination brine in the contiguous United States. The approximate percentage of brine produced in each state is 40%, 23%, 13%.
