Exhibition poses questions about the distinctive vision of women in photojournalism
We came together intuitively; visual storytellers seeking support from others with similar experiences – namely, Canadian women just past the dawn of their careers navigating a field that remains, for the large part, a male domain. That we’re far from the only ones to feel the need to band together is telling of the enduring gender imbalance in photography. Female-driven initiatives are creeping up here and abroad.

But suburban Philadelphia prosecutors could decide not to call her at the May 24 hearing to avoid a grueling cross-examination before trial. Road tolls make sense for Toronto: Editorial
If Toronto city councillors are to have a serious debate about road tolls it would help if they knew what they’re talking about. That’s why makes perfect sense for city staff to commission what’s essentially an “everything you need to know” guide to road pricing on the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway. City hall has issued a 54-page “request for proposals,” inviting consultants to bid on conducting an in-depth study of tolling on these routes. They have until noon on April 11 to apply.
Magna International says strong U.S. dollar hurt results
AURORA, ONT. —Magna International Inc. says the strong American dollar had a significant negative impact on its revenue last year, which was down seven per cent from 2014. The Canadian autoparts giant, which reports in U.S. dollars, says its full-year sales for 2015 were $32.1 billion — down from $34.4 billion in 2014. The impact of foreign currency translations shaved $3.35 billion from the value of Magna’s sales last year and, without that, last year would have been up three per cent from 2014.

The stories that stuck with us: part one
Jennifer Pagliaro, City Hall bureau The first time I met 62-year-old Norm Mattson, he told me he wanted to die. Then he changed his mind and decided to live. I was lucky to watch, over the course of a year, how he valued each new day — adding them to a tally of an addiction-free life. Reporting on 220 Oak St. will stay with me beyond this year because of the people who welcomed us inside the homes they’ve built in a building not always easy to call home.
Smoke in your cocktail - that’s a thing
zoom Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. Not tobacco — there’s a ban on that, even on the patios outside of bars. Vice will find a way, though, and in its stead, people have taken up smoking a new thing — cocktails. Yes, welcome to Toronto cocktail revival 2.0, where ordering a mixed drink in a Toronto bar is liable to set off the fire alarm.
Many options for the halal meat buyer
So you’ve decided to buy halal meat. Congratulations! You’re part of an exciting meat movement sweeping the GTA — one with a cool ethnic vibe. You might have missed the boat on other hipster ethnic fads such as butter chicken, pho or kale, but not this time. Just imagine if you had been the one to introduce your friends to Sriracha, instead of getting hot sauce packets thrown at you when you casually said over tacos last year, “Hey guys, I discovered this really awesome hot sauce.

Ontario-developed sensor could keep drunk drivers off roads
WATERLOO, ONT. — Inside a few Canadian school buses a new sensor technology is helping keep drunk drivers off the roads. It’s part of a test project underway at Sober Steering, a Waterloo, Ont.-based startup that aspires to make the breathalyzer obsolete with a different way to monitor blood-alcohol levels that’s both faster and cheaper. Sober Steering uses touch-based biosensor technology to monitor the person behind the wheel, essentially sniffing alcohol through their skin.

Queen’s Park is failing hungry Ontarians: Cole
Tracy Mead dislikes travelling to a local food bank and lining up for a number, but out of necessity she and her housemates make the monthly trek together. Mead also volunteers at a local meal program, which gives her more access to food she can’t afford to buy. When I meet her at a South Riverdale Community Health Centre this week, we share some quinoa and vegetable salad left over from a previous day’s program.
Spare Aga Khan Museum from property tax: Editorial
A significant amount of tax money would be lost — $240,000 otherwise going to Toronto city hall, and another $92,000 for education. But it’s more than offset by what’s brought to the city through the Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre. This religious centre and museum complex, just off the Don Valley Parkway at Eglinton Ave., is renowned for its elegant architecture, lush landscaping, and one of the finest collections of Islamic art in the world.

Why a scientist killed a bird that hadn’t been seen in 50 years
zoom For Christopher Filardi of the American Museum of Natural History, there is nothing like the thrill of finding a mysterious species. Such animals live at the intersection of myth and biology — tantalizing researchers with the prospect that they may be real, but eluding trustworthy documentation and closer study. Indeed, last month, Filardi waxed poetic on the hunt for the invisible beasts that nonetheless walk among us.
