Re-imagining the future of the INGO
Last month the FCDO hosted a Global Partnership Conference on the future of international development. It included conversations about shifting power and localisation, a segment on AI, and various others on technology. But there was little discussion in the public forums – at least those I attended – about what it will take for INGOs to change and what sort of future we, as leaders, need to be preparing our organisations for.
Is Shift the Power still a meaningful call to action?
Coined by The Global Fund for Community Foundations in 2016 to amplify community philanthropy, ‘Shift the Power’ is now ubiquitous across international development, with governments and NGOs using it to talk about a range of different practices from localisation to rethinking models of operation and partnership. Is this widespread use a sign of progress or is ‘shift the power’ now nothing more than a hollowed-out hashtag?

We can’t hashtag our way to change
In developing Healing Solidarity in 2018, I was trying to reignite conversations about re-imagining ‘development’ which had been happening for decades. At the time, I was amazed by the 1500 e-responses and took it as (further) evidence that many of us who work in and around the sector knew that substantive change in how we work was needed.
Power does not shift easily
The call to shift power and change how INGOs operate is at least a generation old. Yet little progress has been made. There will be many reasons for this but perhaps the simplest explanation is that transformation is hard because power doesn’t give up power easily. At ADD International, we were specifically appointed as CEOs with a remit to transform the organisation.
Ideology As The Measure Of Virtue
Those not alarmed by national trends of public schools becoming political battlegrounds are either not paying attention or are blinded by ideology. The contention between educational administrators and parents in the Coronado community over the adoption of the ADL’s No Place for Hate political program to encourage students to become activists is but a small of the part of a broader national trend.
7 SDLC Phases: An Insider’s Guide to the Methods, Tools & More
What does it actually mean to cycle through the SDLC phases in today’s world? In this guide we will dive into the SDLC phases, breaking down each phase by trends, types of tools and what each phase means for developers and testers. Take a minute to look around you. What do you see? You’re obviously reading this on some sort of device, be it a computer, phone or tablet, and I’m willing to bet the other two aren’t that far away.
100+ Best Software Testing Tools - (Research Done for You!)
Today we’re faced with both a growing number of ways to test new software and a growing number of tools to accomplish those tests. And who really has time to keep track of the hundreds (and counting) of tools out there? Fortunately for you, we do. Use the navigation to the right to jump to different testing tool categories.
Skill Development
Give some badly broken software to a neophyte, ask them to “play with it”, and they will likely be able to find some bugs. Sadly, you won’t know if those bugs matter, if they are the right bugs, or how well the tester covered the application. One classic “solution” to this problem is to get people to run the same scripts every time, but scripted tests introduce other problems, enough that we recommend something else: Train the testers. That brings us to the second problem. Testing is a skill.
