Democracy and Its Discontents
On Sunday, September 1, the voters in Thuringia and Saxony, two states in eastern Germany, elected delegates to their state’s legislatures. Nearly 33 percent in Thuringia and 31 percent in Saxony voted for the Alternative for Germany (known by its German initials as the AfD), a radical right-wing party that evokes memories of Germany’s darkest past. Three weeks later, the AfD won 29 percent of the vote in Brandenburg, just slightly behind the Social Democrats.

[Story] | I Do Something That I Don't Understand, by Mary Gordon | Harper's Magazine
Today I did something and I have no idea why I did it. I followed someone, two people actually, but it was the woman I was really following, the man just happened to be accompanying her. It started on an airplane. I had awakened at four to catch a six-forty flight, so perhaps there is some explanation in the fact that I was very, very tired. It was a six-hour trip and I had slept for only two of the hours.

The Curiously Unique Architecture of Valencia, Spain
The city's most famous buildings are works of art in themselves. Valencia, Spain is often overlooked in favor of its more famous and glamorous sisters, Barcelona and Madrid. However, Valencia is worth a stop for any traveler, with laidback locals, a great climate, and easy beach access.

FICTION There You Heart Lies By Mary Gordon Pantheon 320 pages, $26.95 Author Mary Gordon’s long preoccupation with the Roman Catholic Church -- and its historic stumbling blocks -- suffuses her latest novel, “There Your Heart Lies.” Introspective, and often indignant, this is both a treatise on the 1930s’ Spanish Civil War that propelled General Francisco Franco to the top – and a parable featuring an idealistic young American who puts herself into the fray only to find, by the book’s end,...
Norman's Best Books of 2014
It's a New Year's tradition to hand over the blog to my husband, Norman, for his annual list! Thanks, Susan, for once again letting me tell your readers about the books I’ve enjoyed this past year. My favorite fiction books were, in no particular order, Redeployment, by Phil Klay; Family Life, by Akhil Sharma; Euphoria, by Lily King; All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr; and Dept. of Speculation, by Jenny Offill.
Francis and the Nuns
A year ago this month, Pope Francis gave a long interview to Antonio Spadaro, the editor in chief of an Italian Jesuit journal called La Civiltà Cattolica. Francis was just a few months into his papacy at the time, and the interview — published simultaneously by more than a dozen Jesuit outlets — was for many people around the world their introduction to the first Latin-American pontiff. The interview is long and complex, but a few words were quoted everywhere.
