‘Weed Warriors’ take to the river in Billerica

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... Billerica “Weed Warriors” took to the Concord River on May 31 to rid the waterway of invasive water chestnuts. Seventeen volunteers filled 58 baskets with the aggressive aquatic invasive plant between Bartlett’s Landing boat launch and Route 3A in Billerica. Water chestnuts are problematic for rivers like the Concord, as they can create an impenetrable mat of growth that makes the river inaccessible to boating and fishing.

Billerica marks second Roses of Honor tribute

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... Billerica marked Memorial Day with a quiet and heartfelt tribute during its second annual Roses of Honor program. On May 25, under a gentle rain, volunteers gathered at Fox Hill Cemetery to honor the town’s fallen service members. Moving among the headstones, they placed single roses on veterans’ graves. In all, 2,250 long-stem roses were placed.

Billerica to dedicate Liberty Tree

BILLERICA — To commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, several Billerica organizations have come together to plant a lasting symbol of freedom, one that will grow with future generations. A 45‑foot American elm, purchased from the Liberty Tree Society, was delivered and planted on the Billerica Common on April 21. A formal dedication ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, on the Billerica Common.
