Mary Rickard’s Biography

I am a versatile generalist who can write on a wide variety of topics. I wrote home stories for The Times-Picayune's "Inside Out" and entertainment features and community stories for The New Orleans Advocate, as well as myriad stories about schools, festivals, people, books, artists, sex trafficking, dance, art, photography, the environment and historic renovations. I was theater critic for Gambit Weekly, winning two regional Society of Professional Journalists' Green Eyeshade Awards for arts criticism. Most recently, I have contributed to the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities magazine, "64 Parishes," and ViaNolaVie.com, an online magazine covering arts and culture. For Reuters, I reported on the BP spill and the Henry Glover trial. I wrote a series of historical articles for the Savoy Star, two cover stories for the Springfield's alternative weekly, Illinois Times, and news items for UPI.
