Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Absolutely!

How is social media changing news?

Everyone has the potential of reporting news now and building an audience.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Personal email

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

iPhone, MacBook, Zoom, WeVideo, Anchor

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter

Who do you wish followed you?

I don't really care.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I was always curious about what other people did in their jobs. I found a job talking to people about the things they do and love.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I am not sure I have written it yet.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Ask open-ended questions. Fact-check everything your sources say. Use fewer words to say something.

When's the best time to pitch you?

At least a week before an embargo lifts

What's the best pitch you ever got?

A pitch that included enough information to create the story and access to photos and images with captions.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

"I don't know about you, but..." or anything that starts with that. Also when people think they DESERVE to be included.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Beach, sleep, traveling out of the country, playing with cats

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That only nerds are interested in science. Science is everything.
