Mike Boynton Jr. earned the interim head coaching tag shortly after Dusty May’s departure to the Dallas Mavericks was announced. With Boynton’s first task being player retention and recruitment, it seems fitting to dive into his track record with recruiting as a head coach. Boynton was the head coach of the Oklahoma from 2017-24. During that time, he went 119-109 overall (51-75 in the Big 12). The Cowboys made one appearance in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Round of 32.

“Who’s going to coach Michigan?” “Coach Mike,” Morez Johnson Jr. exclaimed in a video posted to social media shortly after Dusty May’s hiring by the Dallas Mavericks was announced. While the collective Michigan fan base has done vigorous amounts of handwringing over the past week following the shocking departure of Dusty May, the players seems significantly more calm.

Kyle Whittingham accepted Michigan’s head coaching job at the ripe age of 66. After an incredibly successful career at Utah, he will look to finish his career with the cherry on top: a national title. Championship hunting from a coach is certainly not unique, but what is unique is Whittingham’s age at which he was offered a job at a prestigious, blue blood program. So is there any historical precedent for this?
