If any fair is perfectly positioned to mark the U.S.’ 250th birthday, it’s the Big Butler Fair. The western Pennsylvania institution, with more than 83,000 annual visitors, proudly advertises itself as “Always Over the Fourth,” so organizers were eager to make this anniversary year extra special. The 170th installment of the western Pennsylvania fair runs July 3-11, with a bigger-than-ever fireworks show on the Fourth.

9 Acres Burn at Lancaster’s Oregon Dairy

Nine acres of straw burned June 30 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The fire began around 5:30 p.m. on Becker Road in Warwick Township, said Duane Ober, the fire commissioner at Warwick Emergency Services. The land is owned by Oregon Dairy Farm LLC. Chad Hurst, an Oregon Dairy co-owner, said the assumption is the fire was ignited by a machine. “All it takes is one spark when it’s so dry like that,” Ober said. Hurst said the only thing that burned was straw that was waiting to be baled.

Timber Trespass Laws Provide Compensation to Landowners

Landowners whose trees were cut without their permission often can sue the logger for enhanced damages. In Pennsylvania and other states, these specialized civil remedies are provided in timber trespass laws. “It provides a real disincentive for that action,” said Ross Pifer, the director of the Penn State Center for Agricultural and Shale Law. Pifer spoke during a June 17 webinar presented by the National Agricultural Law Center.
