(WJRT) - Fifty years ago Monday, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald freighter sank in the waters of Lake Superior near Whitefish Point in the Upper Peninsula during a fierce storm. The 29 crew members on board all died. Five decades later, investigators have not determined a conclusive cause for the sinking.

GRATIOT COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - 50 years ago today, during a fierce storm, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald freighter sank in the waters of Lake Superior near Whitefish Point in the Upper Peninsula. The 29 crew members on board did not survive. To this day, the exact cause of the ship going down remains a mystery. Tony Hall, who lives in Gratiot County now, was a seaman in the Coast Guard at the time. He and his shipmates answered the rescue call that fateful night.
