US President Donald Trump has declared he wants to take control of the Strait of Hormuz and he wants other countries to pay the US for managing the shipping lane. It's the latest escalation in the dispute between the US and Iran over the shipping route as the two countries drift further from the ceasefire signed just three weeks ago.

US President Donald Trump says the US is reinstating its blockade of Iran in the Strait of Hormuz and will start charging for ships from elsewhere to transit through it. After weeks of insisting the strait must be toll-free, Mr Trump said he would impose charges "at the rate of 20% of all cargo shipped" in return for providing security. The US military later said its forces would resume the blockade from 6am tomorrow (AEST) "against vessels transiting to or from Iranian ports and coastal areas".
