I began this year asleep on a sidewalk in Vancouver under the stupefying effects of methaqualone, the drug famously marketed in North America as Quaalude. I had been at a club on a mini-cocktail of other substances — Hey, it was New Year’s Eve, OK — and a friend offered me one from his new supply of the lost drug. Naively, I said yes, without figuring that it could take me over the edge.

Quaaludes all but vanished after the US banned the euphoria-inducing sleeping pills in 1984. The sweeping measure was the one unequivocal success of the "war on drugs", since "ludes" were produced entirely by the pharmaceutical industry – which complied with the order to cease doing so. "We eliminated the problem," said former Drug Enforcement Administration diversion control head Gene Haislip.
