A historic building on Edinburgh’s Princes Street has been deemed too unsafe to enter after a fire destroyed its roof and upper floors. The building at the site of the old Debenhams department store suffered “significant damage” in the blaze, which broke out around 3am on Thursday. Firefighters worked through the morning to bring the flames under control and continued to dampen down hotspots into the afternoon. The roof and top floors of the disused B-listed building have been destroyed.

A dog has died, and a woman has been injured after an attack by an XL Bully dog in Aberdeen. Police were made aware of a dog, understood to be an XL Bully type, attacking another dog on Greyhope Road around 6.50pm on Wednesday. One dog died at the scene as a result of its injuries, while a woman suffered a hand injury during the incident. Another woman will be the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal, police said.
