I had an exceptionally skilled and sensitive editor in Simon Edge, who worked with me on Totem. He made several extremely helpful suggestions, one of which was to end the book on a hook that would take me to the next installment of Jessie Cunningham and perhaps Todd’s lives. He also wondered whether my proposed ending sat with the tone of the rest of the book, suggesting that it sounded a little ‘spiritual’. He was right.

Practical sympathy for the botched and the weak—Christianity.

It may not be a new phrase for you. Even so, I find myself using it with greater frequency these days — and I’m not entirely sure why.
