Back in July I wrote the substack Can The Washington Post Make It Without Their “TikTok Guy” Dave Jorgenson? That question has started to be answered, and it looks downright terrifying for WaPo. I scraped YouTube view data via RivalIQ for The Washington Post, Washington Post Universe (the account Dave was running), and Local News International (Dave’s new independent venture). Without Dave at the wheel, the Post’s YouTube performance went into free fall.

I've been bullish on the news creator economy for a while now. My 2022 Nieman Lab prediction was built around the idea that all the pieces were finally in place for news creators to become a bigger part of the media ecosystem . This week it was announced that Dave Jorgenson, The Washington Post “TikTok guy”, was leaving the Post to start his own venture. In typical legacy media fashion, the NYT asked the question Can The Washington Post’s TikTok Guy Make It Without The Post?

How NY Mag's Mark Peterson Used Horror Lighting Techniques to Capture a Trump Inauguration Eve Party

Photography often borrows from cinema to tell a deeper story, and Mark Peterson’s images from a Trump “MAGA Victory Rally” on Inauguration Eve are no exception. Peterson’s work cleverly draws on horror and film noir lighting conventions to create a dramatic, unsettling effect, and the work is so amazing in my opinion, I just had to share it. Classic Film Noir / Gangster Shadows In film noir, characters often cast long, looming shadows on the walls or ceilings.
