Orlando Girls Rock Camp gave a stage to the future of local music at annual showcase concert
Orlando Girls Rock Camp gave a stage to the future of local music at annual showcase concert Dear Orlando Girls Rock Camp, Thank you for the two-hour therapy session. It was an unexpected and much needed respite from watching humanity rapidly decay. Sometimes you need to see things through the lens of a guitar-wielding 7-year-old songstress, dressed up as a bumblebee, fervently chanting “Buzz Off” (if you don’t like her) to turn the frown upside down … for the day at least.

Everything we saw at the Warlando music festival in Orlando
Heavy metal festival Warlando took over the Orlando Amphitheater at the Central Florida fair for a day of metal and mud on Saturday. Metalheads and moshers — and cinematic slasher Jason, somehow also in the audience — raged to the likes of Soulfly and Sabaton. Headliners and British metal legends Judas (f***ing) Priest capped off the event to a rapturous response, with singer Rob Halford dressed to the biker nines. Matthew Keller Lehman was truly hellbent for leather when capturing these shots.
All the beautiful people we saw in downtown Orlando on New Year's Eve
Our photographer caught all the smiling faces and clinking glasses in downtown Orlando on New Year's Eve 2019, including the fancy folks at Aloft and Church Street. The Church Street Block Party began at 8 p.m., with live entertainment, drinks and fireworks, before the evening ended with a ball drop at Orange Avenue and Church Street. Aloft Hotel Orlando Downtown hosted a Gatsby's Manor, Roaring '20-themed NYE party, and everyone was dressed to impress. Were you among the lucky few we spotted?

Blockchain takeaways from InsureTech Connect
Find out what our Blockchain Breakthrough in Insurance panelists had to say at InsureTech Connect. For years now, distributed ledger technology (DLT)—and its best-known example, blockchain—has been touted as a game-changer for the insurance industry, on a level with cloud computing and the internet itself. However, while the potential benefits of DLT are undeniable, many insurers are wondering if the reality will live up to the hype.
The true value of DLT in insurance
Process efficiencies are just the start As I have noted in earlier posts in this series, insurance organizations have experimented with blockchain and distributed ledger technology(DLT) for several years. They initially conductedtheir proofs of concept and pilots on public, permissionless technologies such as Ethereum. Despite the industry hype, most of these early experiments did not deliver the value that organizations expected. Companies were also unsure how to take them into production.
The blockchain breakthrough in insurance
Beyond the hype, a glimpse of blockchain’s real value From blockchain’s early years, the insurance industry has grasped the potential advantages of a distributed ledger system that ensures consistency of data across a network. Many insurers were quick out of the starting blocks with distributed ledger technology (DLT) pilots and proofs of concept to experiment with its potential as a disruptive technology.
Traits of a Truly Agile Insurer: Investing in data analytics (Part 4) - Accenture Insurance Blog
By now it should be clear that agility is a critical consideration for insurers looking to gain a competitive edge. In this final video in a four-part series, I talk about why insurers need to invest in data and how more extensive use of data analytics can lead to better business agility. Watch the previous videos in this series: Traits of a Truly Agile Insurer: What does agility mean for insurers? (Part 1)
The Connected Insurer: A passing fad or the next big thing? (1 of 2) - Accenture Insurance Blog
We know that the world is becoming much more connected, and for insurers this means a massive explosion in the amount of data that is becoming available. Will this lead to big changes in the way risk is managed, assessed and underwritten, and in the way carriers engage with their customers? Or will it turn out to be mostly hype and hot air? In this post I introduce the Internet of Things, and explore its likely disruptive impact.
Regulation and consolidation: Two things keeping insurance executives awake - Accenture Insurance Blog
Twenty-nine percent of respondents see consolidation as the leading risk they face. The growing amount of regulation is definitely something that is on insurance executives’ minds, as The Economist Intelligence Unit’s CEO Briefing makes clear. We all know that this added scrutiny by regulators was inevitable after the excesses that provoked the 2008 financial crash, and probably (as one executive rather glumly remarks) it’s all for the best—but the costs of compliance will be high.
Internet of Things cyber security problems create challenges, opportunities for insurers - Accenture Insurance Blog
While the Internet of Things (IoT) is just beginning to grab the media’s attention and will become far more prevalent in the years ahead, many industries already have significant experience with it. That experience tells us the IoT poses both challenges and opportunities for insurers—and that they cannot afford to miscalculate either. As Accenture notes in its report, Security Call to Action—Preparing for the Internet of Things, the IoT is becoming an attractive target for cyber attackers.
The Connected Insurer: How can carriers benefit? (2 of 2) - Accenture Insurance Blog
In my second post in this series I discuss the growing role of connected devices in auto, household, and life and health insurance. I believe they will result in profound changes in the way products are developed, priced and sold. But more than that, they will transform the nature and the frequency of insurers’ interactions with their customers. In this video I look at the capabilities carriers will need to take advantage of this potentially disruptive trend.

Data holds the key to an effective cyber-crime strategy. But the very abundance of the data poses challenges for those insurers seeking to exploit it. Data provides the most significant opportunity for insurers to transform their financial crime capabilities.

In my last post, I outlined the various challenges that cyber security threats surrounding the Internet of Things (IoT) pose for insurers. Those same threats—which Accenture discusses further in its report, Security Call to Action—Preparing for the Internet of Things—also create opportunities for insurers.

During the past few weeks I’ve been discussing the findings of Accenture’s 2016 Technology Vision for Insurance Survey in a series of brief videos. Platforms seen as major driver of growth for insurers - Accenture Insurance Blog
In my last post I discussed the overall 2016 World Economic Forum theme of “Mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution”. This week I want to address the specific issue of disruption caused by platforms. The stakes couldn’t be higher. As our chairman and CEO, Pierre Nanterme, noted at the outset of the conference, digital is the main reason just over half of the companies on the Fortune 500 have disappeared since the year 2000.

For the past month, I’ve been sharing concepts based on the findings of Accenture’s Digital Innovation Survey, focusing on how insurers can target growth in a digital world.
Beyond Insurance (part 4): Drinking deep from the data pool - Accenture Insurance Blog
The connected devices that make up the Internet of Things are increasingly becoming the interface between customers and the companies that provide them with products and services ranging from motor vehicles and fitness apparel through to insurance and home security. At stake here is customer data, which is so valuable exactly because it translates into ownership of customer relationships.
Insurers must beware of overlooking their workforce as they ready themselves for digital transformation - Accenture Insurance Blog
Accenture’s 2016 Technology Vision for Insurance Survey highlights the critical importance of people in the digital transformation of the insurance industry. I discuss the key findings of the survey, and their implications for insurers, in a series of brief videos. You can watch the first video in this series here: In my next video I’ll discuss the four essential pillars of a digital business that support a dynamic and successful corporate culture. Until then, take a look at this link.
Three essential elements for fighting financial crime with data - Accenture Insurance Blog
The key to effective cyber-crime prevention is not more data, but the right data – and using analytics to gain actionable insights. Getting it right requires three vital elements. As I said in my two previous posts, the effective use of data is insurers’ best chance of combatting the fraud and other forms of financial crime that have become the scourge of the industry.
Insurers can learn from Google and Co how to disrupt and dominate a target market - Accenture Insurance Blog
Insurers are increasingly having to fend off competition from Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Alibaba (GAFAA) and other digital specialists. Furthermore, they’re conducting business in a market that is being hugely disrupted by these companies. In the new consumer-to-business (C2B) era digitally-empowered consumers are dictating how companies should serve them.
Traits of a Truly Agile Insurer: Prioritizing strategic decisions (Part 3) - Accenture Insurance Blog
In my previous posts in this series, I discussed what agility means to insurers, and why insurers need to build diverse leadership teams and prepare their ecosystems to act quickly. In this third video in a four-part series, I talk about why prioritizing strategic decisions and speeding up decision-making are key to improving agility. Growth strategies for a digital world: The customer really has become king - Accenture Insurance Blog
The digital insurance experience is giving a whole new meaning to that clichéd but true motto, “The customer is always right.” Today we talk endlessly about the “customer experience,” and how the use of digital technology is supposed to improve it. And it’s true: businesses that truly understand and implement digital technology across their organizations can provide their customers with unparalleled service with a highly personal touch.
Big Questions, Quick Answers: Question 3 - Accenture Insurance Blog
Why should insurers consider becoming part of an ecosystem? Ecosystems have become all the rage—but what lies behind the chatter? What do ecosystems offer insurers that they can’t achieve on their own? In this video I explain why I think they’re crucial—and how to get started: VIDEO View all my videos here as my series continues.
Insurers must become constantly relevant to their customers or they will lose revenue opportunities - Accenture Insurance Blog
One of the biggest challenges facing insurers in the new consumer-to-business (C2B) era, where consumers dictate how suppliers should serve them, is to become constantly relevant to customers. Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Alibaba (GAFAA) have set the standard. They provide their customers with highly tailored, contextual digital services that are always available. Such high levels of service are critical in the C2B era.
Cyber-crime: can you cope with a $163 million headache? - Accenture Insurance Blog
Fraud and other forms of financial crime are rapidly intensifying. If it’s not the criminals causing headaches, it’s the regulators specifying how you defend yourself. What’s the answer? Just a week or so ago, the US Secret Service published its estimate that about 1,000 businesses have had their systems infected by malware that has been linked to numerous remote-access attacks.
Traits of a Truly Agile Insurer: Building diverse leadership teams (Part 2) - Accenture Insurance Blog

Connected in more ways than one—and more often too - Accenture Insurance Blog
Connected insurance also means creating a new ecosystem to deliver customer experiences that breed loyalty—and sustained profits. The inevitable growth in the Internet of Things feeds into the current explosion of data (the “big data” buzzword) that’s now available. Not coincidentally, cloud computing is making the necessary computing power easily and cost-effectively available, and powerful analytics is offering ways to turn that data into actionable insights.
The connected insurer is a customer-first insurer - Accenture Insurance Blog
Forget science fiction—the Internet of Things is a new way for insurers to get better at customer service, and thus strengthen their businesses. In my previous two video blogs, I explained that the Internet of Things threatened some disruption to the established insurance value chain—but that it also offered considerable opportunity. Now I’d like to expand on what I see as two of the main points insurers need to take to heart: customer-centricity and creating an ecosystem.
The IIoT opportunity for Insurance - Accenture Insurance Blog
The most conservative independent estimates place spending on the IIoT worldwide at $20 billion in 2012, with this expected to reach $500 billion by 2020. Predictions of the value created by the IIoT range as high as a $15 trillion boost to global GDP by 2030. Who will benefit? Industry analysis and research by Accenture Strategy indicates that more than 80 percent of future IoT vendor/supplier revenue will go toward the software services that ride on top of IoT connectivity.
Carriers looking to deliver living services must drop outdated business practices - Accenture Insurance Blog
Insurers looking to provide living services to increasingly digital-savvy consumers need to revise their traditional business models. They must shift from many of their conventional methods of attracting and servicing customers and become platform businesses that create value by collaborating with a host of partners and consumers. This shift, as I mentioned in my previous blog post, is a big challenge for many insurers.
Who’s paying for the insurtech investment boom? - Accenture Insurance Blog
Insurtech is gathering momentum. As we saw last week, a strong majority of insurance leaders believe that rapid innovation and ecosystem partnerships are required for success in the industry today. Insurtech firms offer both. Insurtech investment continued to grow in 2016, topping $1.6 billion in 216 deals. Where did that money come from?
The Uncharted: Accenture Insurance Technology Vision 2017 - Accenture Insurance Blog
The last trend I’d like to talk about in this series about the Accenture Technology Vision for Insurance 2017 is “The Uncharted: Invent New Industries, Set New Standards”. Over the course of my posts about the Tech Vision, I have spoken about how artificial intelligence, digital ecosystems and other trends are changing the world. But for society to take full advantage of the new technology, we need to relook technology, standards, ethical norms, government mandates and even the social contract.
Join an Ecosystem or Build One: Accenture Technology Vision 2017 - Accenture Insurance Blog
As I noted in my first blog post in this series, insurance organizations have leveraged digital platforms from third parties for several years. Carriers and brokers were early to recognize the potential of leveraging Google’s platforms for advertising. And in markets such as the UK, aggregators’ platforms account for about 60–70 percent of new personal insurance premiums.

In an earlier post, I briefly introduced the five trends set out in the Accenture Technology Vision for Insurance 2017. This time, I’d like to go into a little more detail about the first trend, which is “AI is the new UI: Experience Above All”. What we mean by this is that AI is taking on an increasingly sophisticated role in technology interfaces. From autonomous driving vehicles that use computer vision to live translations made possible by artificial neural networks, AI is maturing.
Capitalizing on the data deluge - Accenture Insurance Blog
In my previous post, I explored the advances in technology and the opportunities they present the claims organization. This week let’s look at the data deluge resulting from new technologies and how insurers can use analytics to get ahead. In business generally, it is rapidly becoming apparent that the next competitive battleground will be companies’ relative ability to turn the vast quantities of data they generate into actionable insights.
April Fools’? Artificial intelligence is no joke to insurers - Accenture Insurance Blog
Last year on April 1, we heard about Roberto Siber and the Buyonic Insurance Agency in Texas from an article published in the Insurance Journal. It was a harmless joke suggesting that Siber, the principal of the agency, was a robot that could rate, bind and issue policies on the spot, while simultaneously answering the phones and making robocalls to prospects.
