Episode #64 "The Test Dream"
This week Michael and Steve welcome Sopranos writer and producer Matt Weiner to the podcast. Matt was an award-winning writer on the Sopranos but also created the incredible TV series Mad Men. He is a fascinating person and in 2011 he was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world. Synthetic Pseudo-Spin-Hall effect in acoustic metamaterials - Nature Communications
Abstract While vector fields naturally offer additional degrees of freedom for emulating spin, acoustic pressure field is scalar in nature, and it requires engineering of synthetic degrees of freedom by material design. Here we experimentally demonstrate the control of sound waves by using two types of engineered acoustic systems, where synthetic pseudo-spin emerges either as a consequence of the evanescent nature of the field or due to lattice symmetry.

Juicy Confessions: What Our Editors Are Reading
In his spiritual memoir, Confessions, St. Augustine spends the better part of a chapter recounting how, as a teenager, he and his buddies once “filched immense loads” of pears from a neighbor’s tree. Most concerning to Augustine is that they didn’t want to eat the fruit, which, as Sarah Ruden translates Augustine, “offered no draw either in its look or taste”; they just thought it was hilarious to steal them. Stealing pears — or voting rights or human life — is wrong.
What Faith-Based Groups Often Miss in Refugee Resettlement
Many people understand their faith as a refuge, but for refugees resettling in the United States, religion is often the primary refuge. Whether refugees are Syrian Muslim, Cambodian Buddhist, or Liberian Christians, religious organizations have played a critical role in the resettlement of refugees in the last 80 years, and most of the voluntary agencies that partner with the federal government to resettle refugees are faith-based.
Hospitality is dead. Long live hospitality.
If the recent relaxation of some Covid restrictions has shown us anything, it is that many of us have missed visiting restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes, to meet friends and family. True, the current tier system means some people remain quite limited in what they can do and who they can do it with. But where the hospitality sector can open and offer a safe experience, consumers are embracing the opportunity with gusto.
"Mad Men" The Suitcase (TV Episode 2010)
Edit Storyline It's May 25, 1965, the date of two milestones. First, it's the much anticipated heavyweight boxing rematch between Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay. All of the guys from the office are planning on watching the fight at the Loews movie theater, making a night out of it with dinner and drinks beforehand, with Roger and Don having work plans with the Ponds clients before the match. And second, it's Peggy's twenty-sixth birthday.
Demonstration of a third-order hierarchy of topological states in a three-dimensional acoustic metamaterial
Abstract Classical wave systems have constituted an excellent platform for emulating complex quantum phenomena, such as demonstrating topological phenomena in photonics and acoustics. Recently, a new class of topological states localized in more than one dimension of a D-dimensional system, referred to as higher-order topological (HOT) states, has been reported, offering an even more versatile platform to confine and control classical radiation and mechanical motion.

Observation of higher-order topological acoustic states protected by generalized chiral symmetry
Abstract Topological systems are inherently robust to disorder and continuous perturbations, resulting in dissipation-free edge transport of electrons in quantum solids, or reflectionless guiding of photons and phonons in classical wave systems characterized by topological invariants. Recently, a new class of topological materials characterized by bulk polarization has been introduced, and was shown to host higher-order topological corner states.

The Most Scathing Reviews of 2017
We’re not haters here. Book Marks is a benevolent oracle, existing only to enlighten. All we want is to spread the gospel of high quality literary criticism so that our readers can find the books they’ll love. Sure, we house negative reviews alongside all others, because our church is a broad one and because the people demand it, dammit, but the warm spotlight of our favor shines predominantly on the positive. We like to look for the good in every book.
After ‘Mad Men,’ Matthew Weiner Turns to a Novel of Madmen (Published 2017)
HEATHER, THE TOTALITY By Matthew Weiner 138 pp. Little, Brown & Company. $25. If television shows really have replaced the novel as the preferred mirror for our busy lives, then Matthew Weiner is surely one reason. As the creator of “Mad Men” and a major contributor to “The Sopranos,” Weiner has done as much as anyone to prove that TV drama can be as emotionally rich and formally artful as any first-rate novel, while at the same time offering all the senses-saturating enchantment of great cinema.
Matthew Weiner lends distinctive, if annoying, style to first novel

Heather, the Totality
Member Review Review by Irene S L, Media Last updated on 11 Nov 2017 I Recommend This Book Yes I Recommend This Book Yes This is a tale of two families, one of privilege and another of poverty. Karen and Mark Breakstone are comfortably ensconced in a spacious Manhattan apartment with their adolescent daughter, Heather. Bobby Klasky is a 30-ish day laborer who grew up in drug-ridden squalor in a New Jersey slum. The Breakstone family is child-centric; everything revolves around their perfect child.

“Mad Men” Creator Matthew Weiner’s Reassuring Life Advice For Struggli
By Matthew Weiner9 minute Read I remember studying Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem “Kubla Khan” in high school. According to Coleridge, upon waking from a deep, opium-induced reverie, he recalled a vision and immediately wrote the 54 famous lines. But when we started doing the poetic analysis, it became clear that there was no way this poem came out all at once. It has this amazing structure.

‘Mad Men’ Creator Matthew Weiner Reads Frank O’Hara’s poem about Lana Turner
In a statement released by Audible, Weiner said, “When I was asked to read Lunch Poems it scared me, because I love Frank O’Hara’s voice and didn’t want mine to get in the way. His work became a part of Mad Men not only as a touchstone of the period, but more importantly, it supported my emotional purpose for the show, which was to say that our inner lives are timeless.

Five Visionaries and the Creative Circles That Inspire Them
Thom Browne and his band of unique brothers hold playfulness, proportion, and detail supreme. There is a story about Frank Lloyd Wright that he designed all of his houses and furniture to suit a person of his modest height. He did not build to the size of the client or of some idealized person. He suited them to himself. This story may or may not be true, but artists often cite it to confirm, by allegiance with Wright's genius, their self-based process of creation.

This story first appeared in the June 26 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. To receive the magazine, click here to subscribe. A big part of drama is creating a tone — and in the scope of Mad Men, with the passage of time and the smallness of the interactions, we have tried to re-create what we think feels like reality. Sure, it's heightened a little bit. Don Draper has a more interesting life than we do, but he doesn't have a gun, and he's not solving crimes.
