I have been opening a play. It is called Allegra and is about a woman who is relentlessly happy. This is not typecasting. ‘Why do we actors have so much self-esteem and so little self-respect?’ demanded Edmund Kean in the eponymous play Kean,which I last saw in 1990. Funny, I never forgot that line. I’d been bobbing along merrily in rehearsals, learning, improving, rejecting and rejoicing.

It started with an audition in 1987. Every ethnic actress in England was there. It wasn’t a cattle market, but we all knew we were all there. I had never done a commercial before save one local one, featuring the veteran actress Marjorie Rhodes. Her line was ‘Do they deliver round our way?’ On the 16th take, she was still saying ‘Do they live around our way?’ and it became almost impossible to complete the ad without resorting to ventriloquism. This one was big time.

Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, 100, a German-British cellist, was a member of the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz. If I asked her what she would like to be remembered for, she would simply say, ‘I am a cellist.’ She is indeed a remarkable cellist. Her parents were murdered in 1942. Her sister left Germany on the Kindertransport. She and her sister Renata were arrested by the Gestapo, after trying to escape into France, on forged passports, a crime for which she was imprisoned for 18 months.
