My best ever British holiday: 'I've travelled further, at greater expense, and had nothing like as much fun'
Three men in a boat on the Thames One of my best UK holidays was the week I spent in June 2013 rowing from Oxford to London with two friends, James and Tom. We hired the boat from a company called Thames Skiff Hire that mainly caters to people recreating the fictional adventure of the characters in Jerome K Jerome's Three Men in a Boat Our boat – Ewen – was a 26ft, 130-year-old mahogany skiff.

Time travel in the Italian Alps: a glam stay in a 70s design hotel
When I was about seven years old, my aunt brought me back a souvenir from her trip to America – a yellow trouser suit with yellow-and-purple zigzag-patterned flared trousers. I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen and, 50 years later, as I walk into the Seehotel Ambach in Italy’s South Tirol, I can’t help thinking how it’s just the kind of look I should be rocking in the 1970s lobby.

Photograph: Richard Haughton All the greats in one estate, France When you have a partner obsessed with architecture, you can’t expect to go on holiday without a detour to see some building or another. So if it’s a city break, that usually means a walking tour of the architectural highlights interspersed with visits to art galleries. But when we heard about Château La Coste it became clear that this would not be a mere detour but the entire reason for our trip to Provence.

2021: when the link between the climate and biodiversity crises became clear
Photograph: Xinhua/Rex/Shutterstock Bats sweltering in their boxes, polar bears and narwhals using up to four times as much energy to survive, birds starving as Turkey’s lakes dry up, and unique island species at high risk of extinction as the planet warms. If there was ever any doubt about the inextricable link between the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis, those doubts were well and truly dispelled in 2021.
