Today is for mourning
Today is Oct. 7, 2026. Three years ago today was the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Regardless of how you feel about Israel, Palestine or the conflict therein, today is a day of mourning for the innocent lives lost. As I walked onto Beinecke Plaza today, I saw two different installations with two different messages. One group had set up a table with the names of the individuals killed on Oct. 7, 2023.
The case for a safe return to campus
There is no denying that the situation across the country has changed dramatically since the end of June when Hopkins announced its initial plan for returning to campus this fall. With the exception of the Northeast, coronavirus (COVID-19) numbers have been trending in the wrong direction. In late June, Maryland reported a 14-day average of new cases around 370; it is now around 870.
End Zone Throws, Logistic Regression, and The Strange Seahawks Offense
Sometimes doing things for the purpose of beating daily fantasy sports can lead you in weird directions. One example of this is the concept of an end zone throw. End zone throws are throws where the receiver was targeted in the actual, physical end zone. From the perspective of winning football games, I’m not sure end zone throws are helpful to track, but from a fantasy perspective, they are pure gold. A catch in the end zone, obviously, has an 100% chance of being a TD.
Joe Mauer, Freddie Freeman, and Why You Should Be Aggressive on the First Pitch
Joe Mauer takes a lot of first pitch strikes. So far this season, he’s taken 229, approximately 87% of the total first pitches he sees that are in the strike zone. Mauer is a notoriously patient hitter. By contrast, Freddie Freeman is a free swinger. Out of 332 first pitches in the zone, Freeman has taken 73, only about 22% of total first pitch strikes. By this metric, one could argue that Freddie Freeman is the most aggressive hitter in baseball.
3 Golfers to Bet on for the PGA Championship:
There are many Sportsbooks that have already opened up odds for the PGA Championship, and even if you don’t bet, it’s never too early to start thinking about who we might use in DFS for the PGA Championship Millionaire Maker. The three players below likely won’t be buzz-worthy picks unless they pick up a top 10 over the next few weeks, but I think they all have a great shot at winning the year’s last major.
So How Do You Measure Yourself With Other Golfers?
Little did we know, Chevy Chase might have been onto something here. One issue with modeling golf skill, as opposed to other sports, is that we rarely have anything to go off of other than prior performance. In Basketball, we can look at a players height and athletic ability, and synthesize those numbers with his college stats in order to predict how he might do as a pro. But in golf, none of that seems to matter, at least on the surface.
Is Tiger Woods Back?
Tiger Woods was in contention in the Valspar Championship this past week. And the buzz was incredible. The final round of this relatively unknown, early season tournament had an overnight rating of 5.11, which is higher than any golf telecast (outside of the Masters) since 2015. Tiger Woods is back. But is he back, back? Are we about to see the Tiger Woods of old winning Majors with unbelievable shots and clutch putting?

Another Unregulated Site Bites Dust: Jao Poker Apparently Closed
Unregulated U.S.-facing online poker site Jao Poker has closed up shop and doesn't appear likely to settle remaining player balances, according to postings on a couple of online forums. The news comes as little surprise, as Jao Poker appeared to support pretty minimal traffic, and engaged in what looked to be questionable marketing schemes from the start, according to Todd Witteles at Poker Fraud Alert. Witteles outlined the red flags with Jao in an extensive posting on his forum.
Chris Moorman: Playing to Win, No Matter the Stakes
We often hear advice in poker about how to approach "shot taking" — that is, how to manage taking a chance (and perhaps a bankroll risk) by playing in a higher-stakes game than we normally play. But what about those times when we do the opposite — that is, when we drop down in stakes? What adjustments should we make then, if any? Here's a scenario that might seem familiar. A player logs onto his favorite online poker site to play a short session. He typically plays either NL50 or sometimes NL100.

Hand Review: A River Bluff Folds Out Two Opponents
Covering live poker tournaments for a living affords me the opportunity to see countless thousands of hands played out, many of which offer interesting and potentially valuable insights into how players — both amateurs and professionals — play the game. In this ongoing series, I'll highlight hands I've seen at the tournaments I've covered and see if we can glean anything useful from them.

Maria Ho Bags Chip Lead Again with Six Remaining in WSOPE Main Event
There are six players remaining in the 2017 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event and Maria Ho has once again bagged the chip lead at the King's Casino in Rozvadov, Czech Republic. During the middle portions of play on Thursday, Ho extended her lead to almost 5,000,000 but as the evening went on and the shorter stacks started to shove, she fell back closer to the field. Marti Roca De Torres gained the most ground and bagged only 620,000 less than Ho going to the final day.
How Long Is the Long Run in Poker?
In poker, the question "How long is the long run?" often comes up when beginners are thinking about whether or not they are winners. They know that all players run hot and cold, getting lucky and unlucky. They are told not to rely on short term results when judging whether or not they are winning players. Rather they must keep good records and see how they do in the long run. But what exactly is the long run? And how will they know it when they get there?

Hand Review: Christoph Vogelsang on His Big Call to Win the SHRB
The feared German crew is the talk of the poker world at the moment after going through the Poker Masters series, covered here on PokerNews, like a collective wrecking ball, taking everyone's money and heading back across the pond. Christoph Vogelsang wasn't the one doing damage at the ARIA Resort & Casino over the last week-and-a-half, but he already raked in his share when he won the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl there at the beginning of the summer for a cool $6 million.
WATCH: 'Molly’s Game' Trailer Drops Starring Jessica Chastain
In 2013, Molly Bloom, also known as the "Poker Princess," pled guilty to charges of running an illegal high-stakes poker game for celebrities and Wall Street millionaires. A year later, she released a tell-all on those infamous high-stakes games which told stories of big names such as Tobey Maguire, Ben Affleck Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio. Bloom’s revealing book grabbed the attention of not only poker fans but storytellers and film makers in Hollywood.
Harry Arutyunyan Wins WSOP Circuit Cherokee Main Event
Sean Yu got into his second winner's photo in less than a week at World Series of Poker Circuit Cherokee in North Carolina. However, this time the WSOP Global Casino Championship winner wasn't holding the winning hand. He was in the background cheering on his friend, as Harry Arutyunyan won the $1,675 Main Event, topping a field of 1,022 entries for $283,597. It's the biggest cash for the L.A. business owner, who has a WPT title and over $1 million in cashes now.
Finding the Best Reaction to a Bad Result
When looking back at our own poker playing history, many of us find memories filled with an assortment of our biggest moments — good and bad. There's the prideful climbing through levels of achievement as we outsmart tough opponents and nemeses du jour. There are the near misses of the big (and bigger) scores. And maybe there are even some breakthroughs to trophies and bracelets for the skilled and the fortunate.
Another Strong Turnout for Day 1b of WSOP Main Event
The 2017 World Series of Poker Main Event opened strong with the best Day 1a turnout in years on Saturday, and Sunday proved to be no different. The biggest Day 1b field in the past six years showed up to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, as 2,164 filled enough seats to overflow the Amazon and Brasilia Rooms and push the tournament into Miranda. That turnout brought the two-day total to 2,959.
History of the World Series of Poker Main Event: 2000-2009
When the 2000s began, it was still possible to argue that the World Series of Poker still resembled in many respects what the tournament series had been throughout its first three decades. Sure, the fields had become much bigger, more amateurs and players from all over the world were participating, and the number of preliminary events had grown to cause the WSOP to stretch over two-and-a-half weeks rather than last just a few days.
Matthew Schreiber Runs Over $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. to Win First WSOP Bracelet
Less than three hours into play at the final table, Matthew Schreiber remained the last man standing in Event #44: $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. Schreiber waltzed through the final table in a lethal fashion, earning the $256,226 first-place prize along with his first bracelet. "It feels surreal," the newest WSOP champion said. Schreiber came back for the final day sixth in chips with 18 players left in contention. It was a day of fast-paced action, but Schreiber wasn't looking to be the main man.
Player of the Week: Adrian Mateos Makes WSOP History
One might think winning a bracelet in a prestigious $10,000 event would warrant a few days off. But that's not how Adrian Mateos rolls, hopping right back into the grind the next day after. "I will play every day because I love to play," Mateos told PokerNews on Monday. "It's not work for me to play and I'm pretty happy when I play. I will take one week off before the Main Event, but I plan to play as much as I can." Adrian Mateos was primed for a stellar World Series of Poker.
Poker & Pop Culture: Disorder in the Cards in American Westerns
Picking up once more our survey of "classic westerns" featuring the favorite card game of the Old West, the films we previously examined — Sunset Trail (1939), Tall in the Saddle (1944), Winchester '73 — all conspicuously shared a common element. All portrayed the film's villains playing poker — and losing. With varying degrees of subtlety, the poker games in those films all served to foreshadow the conclusions of their larger narratives.
Five Weak Reasons to Bet (and One Weak Reason Not To)
In my previous columns I strongly state that there are only two fundamental reasons to bet — for value or as a bluff. Yet there are many other reasons experts often cite as reasons to bet. Today I will show why these are not primary reasons to bet. Indeed, they can often lead us astray. A reminder — we're focusing primarily on low-stakes live cash games such as are played in Las Vegas (defined as "Donkey Poker" in an earlier column).
Michal Mrakeš Wins partypoker LIVE MILLION Germany €1,100 Main Event
The Czech Republic's Michal Mrakeš outlasted a field of 820 entrants to win the 2017 partypoker MILLION LIVE €1,100 Main Event for €200,000. Mrakeš entered the third and final day in the chip lead among the 26 hopefuls remaining in contention. However, things did not start off well for the Czech as he lost his first five flips of the day and dropped into the middle of the pack.
Upeshka De Silva Wins WSOP Event #3: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout
Upeshka De Silva won the World Series of Poker Event #3: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout for $229,923, beating a field of 369 players to win his second gold bracelet. De Silva won three tables in three days to secure the tournament title. In the final hand, De Silva and Louis Helm got all the chips in preflop. De Silva had a dominating lead with his ace-jack against Helm's ace-eight, and his hand was still best on the river.
Luigi Shehadeh Wins 2017 888Live Barcelona Main Event
The €1,100 Main Event of the 2017 888Live Poker Festival Barcelona easily eclipsed the guarantee as a total of 609 entries generated a prize pool €584,640. After two days and 22 levels of play, only 25 hopefuls remained at Casino Barcelona to play for a top prize of €15,000. Luigi Shehadeh, a 23-year-old online MTT specialist from Italy who made the trip to Barcelona alongside his brother Fares, eventually emerged victorious after a dominating performance on the final day.
Jonathan Little Decides to Slow Play a Set in a Three-Bet Pot
We return to the same $3,500 buy-in World Poker Tour event from last week. With it still early in the tournament, today's hand involves flopping a set and then looking for the best way to extract value. The blinds were 200/400 with a 50 ante, and with almost 67,000 in my stack I was dealt on the button. It folded to me and I raised to 1,000. A tight-aggressive player in the small blind with about 55,000 to begin then elected to three-bet to 2,600.
Natalia Breviglieri Plays ‘Would You Rather?’
While taking on the massive fields and £6 million guarantee at Nottingham’s Dusk Till Dawn Casino, we cornered everyone’s favorite pint-sized partypoker pro. Natalia Breviglieri has had some fantastic results since turning partypoker ambassador and her online profile is rising in time with her live tournament reputation. Breviglieri is on the brink of special things in the poker industry, so we thought we’d put here to the test with a few questions designed to polarize her preferences.
Pete Chen Wins WPT Beijing to Kick Off New Season
With the Monster World Poker Tour Tournament of Champions all wrapped up, the WPT wasted no time in moving on to Season 16, which began with Pete Yanhan Chen taking down WPT Beijing for $299,485. The win pushes Chen, a Macau-based pro from Taiwan, past $1 million in lifetime tournament cashes. It's his biggest score to date, surpassing the $90,172 he cashed for at PokerStars Championship Macau Main Event, where he finished in sixth place.
Becker, Dunst and Sexton Survive partypokerLIVE MILLIONS Day 1e
It was another busy day at the home of poker in the United Kingdom, as both the main room as well as the Marquee room of the Dusk Till Dawn Nottingham cardroom were in use for the last Live Day 1 of the partypokerLIVE MILLIONS £5,300 Main Event. While the official numbers are yet to be confirmed, it seems that the £6m guaranteed flagship tournament of the festival has almost reached the guarantee already thanks to the additional 345 unique entries and 35 re-entries on Day 1e.
10 Tips for Sit & Go Success: Practical Applications of ICM
Last time we introduced the Independent Chip Model and discussed how the concept can be useful to players of sit & gos. Knowing about ICM can be handy when playing any kind of poker tournament, given the way it helps players take into account payout structures and assign "real money value" to in-hand decisions made over tournament chips.
Vojtech Ruzicka Wins the 2017 partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Dusk Till Dawn £10,300 High Roller
2016 November Niner Vojtech Ruzicka emerged victorious after an intense heads-up battle with Bartlomiej "Bartek" Machon at the additional third and final day of the 2017 partypokerLIVE MILLIONS £10,300 High Roller at the Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham. “It feels great!
