Everyone Says Datacenter Moratoriums Are Killing the US Buildout. We disagree
The debate on US datacenters has never been so politically charged. Four states have acted in under two months. New York has stopped issuing environmental permits for datacenters, Texas has paused the next step in its massive ERCOT interconnection queue, Pennsylvania has pulled datacenters out of fast-track permitting and made state permits conditional on new guardrails, and Oregon has frozen datacenter deals on state-owned land.
Stop Saying Half of 2026 US Datacenter Capacity Is Canceled
The claim that half of 2026 US datacenter capacity will be delayed or canceled has been circulating widely across financial and social media. This traces back to Bloomberg’s April 1, 2026 piece, America’s AI Build-Out Hinges on Chinese Electrical Parts, which framed the 2026 capacity slowdown as a consequence of a fragile, China-dependent equipment supply chain.
xAI’s Colossus 2 - First Gigawatt Datacenter In The World, Unique RL Methodology, Capital Raise
Much has been written about xAI’s Colossus 1. The Memphis build belongs in the history books: the largest AI training cluster, erected from scratch in 122 days. With roughly 200,000 H100/H200s and ~30,000 GB200 NVL72, it remains, today, the largest fully operational, single-coherent cluster (setting apart Google, master of multi-datacenter-training). However, Colossus 1’s ~300 MW looks modest next to the Gigawatt-scale clusters under construction by OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic.
