KAKE Television joined the Kansas airwaves on October 19, 1954 broadcasting directly out of Wichita. The station became an ABC affiliate in 1955, a relationship that continues to this day. The local programming created by KAKE in its early years would win over a generation of lifetime viewers. Children’s shows like Romper Room, Captain Bill, and Santa’s Workshop brought kids hurrying home after school, while their parents learned to “keep it on KAKE” for the best local news and weather.
In October 1964, KAKE signed on satellite station KUPK from Garden City for viewers in southwestern Kansas. Today, KAKE also delivers up-to-the-minute newscasts and severe weather coverage to KLBY in northwest Kansas and KHDS-LD northcentral Kansas.
From “Good Morning Kansas” to “KAKE News at 10,” KAKE lives up to its On Your Side brand with almost 40 hours of locally-produced news coverage each week. After various broadcast owners in its 60 plus years, Lockwood Broadcast Group officially acquired KAKE on February 1, 2016.
