MIAMI (AP) — A 77-year-old Florida man convicted of beating a woman to death with a hammer is scheduled Tuesday to become the 16th person executed this year in the nation's busiest death chamber. Curtis Wilkie Beasley was sentenced to death after being convicted of first-degree murder, robbery and grand theft auto in a 1995 attack on Carolyn Monfort.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard urged Americans in a message ahead of U.S. midterm elections to take to the streets and rally against Donald Trump, claiming the U.S. president's war in the Middle East has failed. The Guard's spokesman said such street protests should denounce what he called the U.S. government’s war-mongering policies. He said Americans should "revise their decision” about their leaders.

The historic Neiman Marcus store at Main and Ervay streets in downtown Dallas closes for good Wednesday, ending more than a century of luxury retail at the company’s flagship corner. FOX 4 reportsFOX 4 reports the last day of business is Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the store that has occupied the site since the company rebuilt there after a 1914 fire. Parent company Saks Global, which also owns Saks Fifth Avenue, confirmed the closure in June after earlier plans to leave were delayed.

Iran’s currency fell to a new record low on Tuesday, with traders in Tehran exchanging more than 2.5 million rials to the U.S. dollar in a stark reflection of how the war in the Middle East has steadily eroded the Iranian economy. The latest decline came just 27 days after the rial hit its previous record of 2.2 million to the dollar on Sept. 2. The currency has repeatedly reached new lows since the war began in February.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday that two Longhorns will face internal discipline after crude celebrations in No. 1 Texas’ 20-17 win at No. 14 Tennessee. The Associated Press reports Sarkisian met separately with defensive end Colin Simmons and running back Raleek Brown after the team’s Monday review session. Governor Greg Abbott issued a statewide disaster proclamation Monday aimed at high diesel prices, temporarily allowing cheaper dyed diesel on Texas highways. The governor’s office said the order suspends state restrictions and penalties that normally keep dyed diesel off public roads. That fuel is typically reserved for farms, construction sites and other off-road engines and is sold without the usual highway fuel tax. The proclamation does not waive the underlying fuel tax.

Governor Greg Abbott is warning Texans of heavy rain and flash flooding from late Wednesday through Thursday and says nearly 2,000 state responders are already in place. The governor’s office said Abbott held a briefing Monday at the State Emergency Operations Center and directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to add resources. More than 1,900 state responders and more than 1,500 pieces of equipment are available, including swift-water teams, high-water vehicles, boats and helicopters.

OpenAI said Monday it was delaying the release of a new artificial intelligence model out of security concerns voiced by its researchers, the latest in the company's effort to decelerate the pace of the technology's advance. OpenAI’s decision to hold back the model, called GPT-6.1 Astra, comes amid a broader push within the industry to slow the development of increasingly autonomous systems until safety measures can catch up.
