Storey County deputies have released more details after a deadly weekend motorcycle crash in Virginia City. Deputies say an officer tried to stop a black motorcycle after it nearly went head-on with a deputy on C Street near Taylor just after 8:45 p.m. on Sunday. Deputies say the unidentified rider slowed down, looked over his shoulder, then sped off going the wrong-way on north C Street near Sutton Street.
Washoe County deputies warn of scam calls posing as law enforcement
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is warning people about an ongoing phone scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement and other government employees to try to obtain money or personal information. According to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office in an online post, the agency continues to receive reports of scammers posing as deputies, supervisors, and other government employees.
Elephant Fire still 6,436 acres, 5% contained near Loyalton
The Elephant Fire east of Loyalton is still 5% contained at 6,436 acres. The cause remains under investigation. It started just before 1:30 p.m. Saturday north of Loyalton and Highway 49 in the Tahoe National Forest. More than 430 personnel are working the fire. People in LAS-451-A are ordered to evacuate. Reno woman dies in boat collision at Frenchman Lake
The Plumas County Sheriff's Office says a Reno woman died after a boating collision at Frenchman Lake on Saturday. Deputies say they responded to near the Frenchman Lake Boat Launch just after 11:15 a.m. to find a boating collision involving a personal watercraft and a recreational boat. Lifesaving efforts were immediately started on the woman of the personal watercraft, but 47-year-old Sandra Ann Skender died on scene.
Inmate dies in Mono County Jail; Washoe County to conduct autopsy
An investigation is underway after an inmate died in Mono County Jail on Friday morning. The Mono County Sheriff's Office says deputies found 49-year-old John DeMotto unresponsive alone in his cell just before 3:15 a.m. Medical services were then called and attempts were made to revive DeMotto but he was declared dead at 3:52 a.m. Investigators from the Mono County District Attorney and Mono County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the in-custody death investigation.
Nine arrested in Washoe County operation targeting commercial sex crimes involving children
A two-day operation targeting people seeking illegal commercial sex activity in Washoe County led to nine arrests and the recovery of two victims. The Regional Human Exploitation and Trafficking, or HEAT, Unit worked with the Regional Gang Unit, Reno Police Department's Mobile Engagement Team, Real Time Intelligence Center analysts, Reno Police Department's RAPTOR Unit, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office HAWK Unit, and the Nevada Threat Analysis Center during the operation.
