We arrive at the penultimate day of the 2026 Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival, located in the heart of Switzerland, where the only Swiss festival dedicated to genre films has held sway for the past week. Overlooking a beautiful lake, Neuchatel is known as the center of the Swiss watch industry, and is perfect for strolling at a leisurely pace. The festival takes advantage of its setting with time set aside every day for exploring board games and various virtual worlds.

Any one of those words, alone or collectively, can also describe Moana, the less-than-anticipated live-action remake of the 10-year-old animated hit that enthralled audiences in theaters and has done likewise at home since its release. For the second time in the 2025 Tribeca Festival program, a film starts with a Q&A session that doesn’t go overly well. At least, the filmmaker protagonist of The Travel Companion mostly has to just stand there awkwardly, digesting the fact that no one cares that much about his film.

Stoner comedies, when they hit the right vibe, can work very well even fopr those who have no experience with or interest in a partiocular substance. It's an oddly relatable situation, when you are not quite in the right mind set, not quite in the same wavelength as everyone else, and everything is excagerrated or magical or weird. Or in the case of The Wrong Girls, dangerous.

The opening moments hit like lightning, as two youth gangs race through the streets and leap across buildings in a nightly game, a dance to kill the boredom of their lives. Ten year before, the planet was hit by meteorites. The scattered dust was ingested by humans, resulting in young people gaining (limited) superpowers.

The first five minutes are willfully gross, detailing the poverty-stricken life of Yani, a catgirl beast living alone in a filthy apartment, filled with cigarette butts and bags of trash. To reinforce the mood, we also see her defecating, explicitly. (Plop, plop, fizz, fizz.) Everything about her life revolves around her smoking.

In the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, police outpost chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of local hunters, including Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading.

Roadside Attractions will release Casper Kelly's Buddy in theaters on August 28, 2026.
