Kids explore future careers at community fair in Scranton
SCRANTON, Pa. — Inspiring children to think about their future was the goal behind a fun, family event in Scranton Saturday. Hundreds of people gathered on the grounds of the Outreach Center for Community Resources on 7th Avenue for the children's career fair. Kids and adults got a chance to see what it's like to be a police officer or firefighter, while some tried their hand at carpentry and woodworking. Some also stopped by the WNEP booth to learn what it's like to be a TV broadcaster.
Lackawanna County softball tournament raises funds for cancer support
THROOP, Pa. — An annual softball tournament is raising money for a cause in Lackawanna County. The fifth annual "Strong and Coura'Jess Foundation Softball Tournament" was held at the Troop Little League field in memory of Jess Rutkowski. She passed away from stage four breast cancer in 2021. All proceeds from the event along Sanderson Street will support "The Strong and Coura'Jess Foundation," a non-profit started by her daughter when Jess was first diagnosed in 2019. "It's just amazing.
Wyoming Valley Mall hosts free back-to-school event in Wilkes-Barre
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — The back-to-school rush is in full swing, and the Wyoming Valley Mall is taking part in the shopping tradition. The shopping center in Wilkes-Barre Township hosted a back-to-school event. Beginning at noon, the catholic social services of the Diocese of Scranton sponsored a free event in center court. It featured free dental exams, haircuts, and face painting, among other things.

Scranton veteran whose esophageal cancer was thought linked to Afghanistan burn pits dies
SCRANTON, Pa. — Sergeant First Class Paul Welby, an Army veteran from Scranton who developed esophageal cancer potentially from exposure to burn puts in Afghanistan, died Friday. He was 43. Welby's death was confirmed by members of his family. Remembered Saturday as a "resilient spirit," Welby was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in June. Welby joined the Army nearly 20 years ago and served in Afghanistan. It is believed his exposure to burn puts there contributed to his development of cancer.
Helmet giveaway promotes safety at Pittston Tomato Festival
PITTSTON, Pa. — The Pittston Tomato Festival brought families to downtown Pittston, where organizers promoted safety alongside the weekend's festivities. At the HKQ Kids Helmet Giveaway, children received free helmets to help keep them protected while riding bikes, scooters and other recreational equipment. Joe Quinn, an attorney with HKQ Law, said the giveaway is part of the firm's effort to give back to the community and help families who may not be able to afford helmets.
