Grubby, the female opossum that hitched a ride to Alaska on a shipping container two years ago — spurring a manhunt, memes and a frenzy in a small coastal town — has died, the Alaska Zoo said Tuesday. The Virginia opossum, which zoo staff had taken to calling Ophelia, died Saturday from what the zoo described in a statement as complications of old age. The marsupial was found in spring 2023 huddled in the back of a shipping container that arrived in Homer from Washington state.

1 hurt, several units compromised in Midtown Anchorage apartment fire

Several units were impacted and one person was taken to the hospital in the wake of a fire at an apartment complex Monday evening in Midtown Anchorage, a fire official said. The call about the fire at the Village at Calais apartments off West 32nd Avenue came in just before 5:45 p.m., Anchorage Fire Department spokesperson Megan Peters said.

Truck strikes Tudor Road bridge over Seward Highway, prompting road closures

The Tudor Road bridge that crosses the Seward Highway in Midtown Anchorage was closed Friday evening after it was struck by “an oversized truck,” causing significant damage, the Anchorage Police said. The police department put out a series of alerts shortly after 5 p.m. Friday stating that a truck heading north on the Seward Highway had hit the bridge, which was closed both east- and westbound. Police added that two northbound lanes of the highway were closed as well.
