What was your first job as a journalist?
I worked for a little newspaper in Connecticut, covering the public education beat. I spent a lot of time at school board meetings.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is best. Short and sweet, please.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
For print, it's just paper and pen and a tape recorder. For video, I edit packages using Final Cut Pro7.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I love to tell stories, and because I wanted to see the world up close.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
That's tough, but I'm particularly proud of a story about four bullied teens in Ohio who committed suicide. It shed light on some dark stuff.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Pack your bags and go live and work someplace that's foreign to you, whether that's Iowa or Lebanon. Work hard. Don't forget to have fun.
