Newborns, or infants under 28 days of age, account for the greatest proportion of deaths amongst under-five children. The vast majority of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which in 2016 comprised 98.5% of the 2.61 million neonatal deaths worldwide [1]. The estimated average of neonatal mortality rates in LMICs was 20 per 1000 live births, compared to 3 per 1000 in high-income countries [1].
