My name is Melisa Goss and I am the assistant editor for the Tri-State Neighbor. It’s a newspaper I grew up reading, as agriculture has always been integral to my family. My paternal grandparents were in the sheep industry for ages. (In fact, sheep have been in the Goss family since we arrived in America in 1623!) Innovation requires careful testing. That was a key takeaway for Blake Burggraff over the last few years as he worked to transition his crop ground to certified organic. Burggraff, who served as a Tri-State Neighbor Crop Watcher in 2023, has now been certified organic on his crop ground for two years. The Minnehaha County producer opened his farm to the public during a Sept. 20 field day hosted by South Dakota Specialty Producers Association.

Agricultural leaders and policymakers are urging U.S. producers to expand their reach into emerging markets and reduce reliance on China, even as the Asian nation remains a major buyer of American farm goods. “It’s so hard to cut a deal with China because they don't have a very good track record of holding up their end of the bargain,” Rep.
