For Wendy Bula, seeing a re-enactment of what happened to her decades ago was jarring. “I remember it happening like it was yesterday,” Ms. Bula said. “It took me years to be able to ride a school bus again.” Ms. Bula, a substitute bus aide for Maumee schools, watched as a 2006 decommissioned Springfield school bus rolled over during a safety demonstration at Bubba's Heavy Duty Towing & Truck Repair in Monclova Township.

In a sea of hundreds of parents and their children, Heather Baker had only one way to describe the scene before her. “It looks like the lines at Cedar Point,” Mrs. Baker said. “It’s controlled chaos, and I’m so happy we had a great turnout.” Mrs. Baker, executive director of community engagement and student support for Toledo Public Schools, orchestrated the district’s Back to School Bash on Tuesday at Bowsher High. Students at the event received free book bags, school supplies, and shoes.

Amy Craig came to Sacred Markings tattoo shop Sunday with a purpose. “I am getting a lotus flower because I am going through a new beginning,” said Ms. Craig, of Oregon. “I thought it would be a good time to go.” The young woman is now three years out from being diagnosed with breast cancer and having a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. “The lotus is symbolic for me,” she said. “I am still here and feeling really good.
