What’s going on with this Trump picture?
Posted Sep 24, 2026 at 6:28 PM UTC What’s going on with this Trump picture? On Thursday, Trump posted a picture to Truth Social of himself with Chinese President Xi Jinping that doesn’t comport with Getty Images of the event. Why does Trump only have one glove? Why did the face of the woman in the background change? The answer could include anything from uprezzing to “zooming out” the camera to deliberately replacing faces with AI.
I need to See Everything now.

Trying to explain One Night Only’s tech-enforced sex dystopia Original
From the omnipresent One Night Only trailer, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the movie glosses over its terrifying and absurd premise — in otherwise normal modern New York, single people can only have sex one night a year — to deliver an entirely traditional romantic comedy. I’m here to report that it does not do that.
Thomas B. Crown.

Jordan’s The Thomas Crown Affair remake remake is out, and it looks to be as sexy, heisty, and suave as the 1999 Brosnan/Russo version. Merriam-Webster tags in.
Posted Jul 23, 2026 at 3:01 PM UTC Merriam-Webster tags in. The internet’s favorite dictionary just dropped a new word game, Tagline — and, surprisingly, there’s not a definition in sight. The game consists of three increasingly difficult clues with hangman-style answers to guess. The twist is that all the solutions are made up entirely from the same seven letters. We’re doing Pride and Prejudice again.
Posted Feb 24, 2026 at 4:18 PM UTC M Meredith Haggerty We’re doing Pride and Prejudice again. Jane Austen’s signature work is being adapted for Netflix. Think Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016), but no zombies, so think the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, but a series, so think the 1995 miniseries starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. It’s scheduled for release sometime later this year; Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden star.

Heir Mail: An invitation to sign up for a different newsletter that isn't Heir Mail
10 years ago, on November 13th, 2015, Racked.com published a story called “I Dressed Like Me for a Week,” written by me. At the time, “I Dressed Like” stories were popular, with braver writers than I trying out the wardrobes of everyone from Kate Middleton to Cookie Lyon (back when a solid chunk of people easily remembered that she was the character Taraji P. Henson played on Empire; a simpler and better time).
Oscars 2025: Anora, Mikey Madison, Emilia Pérez and other winner and losers
It won’t go down as the most exciting Oscars on record — there was no slap or envelope mix-up after all — but for this year’s Academy Awards, ending an unexpectedly cacophonous awards season with a smooth, calamity-free ceremony clocking in at under four hours was arguably the best of all possible outcomes. The big winner of the evening, Anora, scooped up five of its six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Mikey Madison (sorry, Demi!).
Luka Dončić and the Mavericks-Laker trade controversy, explained as best we can
Welcome to Know-It-All. In the age of information overload and so many things to care about, Vox experts explain what you need to know to get into a particular corner of culture. I don’t want to sound like too much of an expert, but this past weekend, something big and weird happened in the world of basketball. As someone who doesn’t pay all that much attention to sports, stories from that world only cross my radar when no one can stop talking about them. But as a gossip, I really love mess.
Say Nothing’s Gerry Adams IRA denial disclaimer, explained
Every episode of Say Nothing, the FX/Hulu show based on the nonfiction book of the same name, ends with a disclaimer: “Gerry Adams has always denied being a member of the IRA or participating in any IRA-related violence.” Disclaimers aren’t unusual in film and television (arguably even more shows should employ them) but the Adams disclaimer still stands out.
3 unexpected winners — and 1 predictable loser — from the Paris Olympics so far
We all know the medal winners for the competitions that have taken place so far in the 2024 Paris Olympics (or, rather, they’re all a single click away). The US women’s gymnastics team reclaimed gold for the team all-around after a second-place finish in Tokyo, while the men’s team won its first medal in the team event since 2008. Some of China’s swimming successes are being scrutinized, given recent doping scandals.
Announcing a new newsletter
So, I’ve always said that this newsletter, nominally about heiresses, was really about gossip and dresses and kissing and money. And then apparently sometime in early 2022, I completely burned out on writing it (sorry about that!!).
Why are Christmas movies - from Hallmark to The Holiday - romantic?
This year alone, 116 new holiday movies were released to TV and streaming. Conservatively, I’m going to estimate that 115 of them were romantic comedies. Starting with Destined 2: Christmas Once More, which premiered on Great American Family back in October, the season saw cinematic offerings with titles like How to Fall in Love by the Holidays and Christmas Holidate (not to be confused with Netflix’s 2020 film Holidate) and the impeccably named Never Been Chris’d.
Magic Mike’s Last Dance review: What the Channing Tatum film says about female desire
Warner Bros. There was something really satisfying about being able to say, straight-facedly, that the first Magic Mike movie is “about the economy, actually.” This was maybe the first thing the series really understood about female desire, the eventual subject of its trilogy, which concludes with Magic Mike’s Last Dance. Or, that’s not quite right. The Magic Mike trilogy is about the economics of female desire, actually.
The Big Squeeze
The economy’s stacked against us. We live in a world that’s constantly trying to sucker us and trick us, where we’re always surrounded by scams, big and small. And not all of them are obviously illegal; most are business as usual. Car rentals come with a litany of unexplained fees. Cable companies are rarely forced to compete for our business. Crypto and the stock market are supposed to level the playing field, but in general, the house always wins.

Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. So, sommmmething that came up in the alert this week was by me, for Town & Country, about the return of the heiress. In my own alert! I’d tell you more but go read it there. Or buy the physical magazine! Because it’s in there! It’s fun to buy a magazine! Pretend you’re at the beach, etc.

What to Read: Meredith Haggerty is on alert for heiresses
This week, we interviewed Meredith Haggerty, who writes Heir Mail, a publication that highlights contemporary stories of inherited wealth. This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity. What’s your publication about in one sentence? What comes up when you keep a Google Alert for the word “heiress” (if you have generally anti-capitalist politics, an unkillable interest in glamour, and unfettered access to Wikipedia).
Heir Mail #31
Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. Who needs an intro, not us!!! Command + Shift + F for: Paris Hilton’s fiance’s boozy past (he was a liquor entrepreneur, duh) A company in India that handles your dinner, your flight, and your ambulance ride to the hospital. Sad shit that started at a pancake house.
Heir Mail #30
Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. I’m going to do two things here, one of which will be intensely self-indulgent — so sorry, I don’t have an editor here and no one can stop me, proving again this is system is bad — and the other of which will hopefully be fun, and will certainly come first.
Heir Mail #29
Hi hi hi! This newsletter has seen some new signups, so I wanted to set extremely unrealistic expectations by sending it out two weeks in a row, and at a weird time. What a choice to make! She’s unpredictable! Command + F the bold words to find: Anna Delvey’s first interview highlights: [file not found]. I don’t understand international relations! Gloria’s little boy is out and about and telling tales of her panache.
Heir Mail # 28
Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. (Eh, sorta.) This week, this month actually, I didn’t look at the alert, because I could not afford to get distracted.
Heir Mail #27
Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. Welcome back from a surprise (to me) hiatus! I thought that I’d have plenty of time to write this a couple weeks ago when I was visiting family, but I was very busy being feted by everyone my parents’ have ever known, meeting and (safely) mingling with retired and semi-retired people from all over the New England area.
Heir Mail #26
Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. Hi, hi, hi. Command + F: Mining money walks away from Scooter Braun, and we are forced to ponder questions about exploitation. “The unluckiest heiress.” We adopt Heir Mail-y in Paris as an official section name, even though I didn’t mean to write about her.
Heir Mail #25
Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. Not to draw a bunch of attention to it, but there hasn’t been a lot of editorial judgement that goes into writing this newsletter lately. I feel like I’ve been dragging my corpus around here the last few months, pinging dully off of news items would have sent me to Mars back in January.
Heir Mail #24
Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. Hi, hi, hi, it’s been a minute, hello. Turns out it is fun to leave the house and not spend every other Saturday sitting inside thinking about rich people? Will continue to monitor this situation, but we’re back this week.
Heir Mail #23
Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. This week, more rich people, just like you signed up for! Also I just realized that it’s actually Command + F and not CTRL + F that helps you find things on the computer (by reading Hunter Harris’s amazing newsletter) but also I’m just going to keep doing it???
Heir Mail #22
Hello! You’re reading Heir Mail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. Hello, do you want to drive me from New York to the Breakers, former home of the Vanderbilts in Newport, RI? PlutoTV has been showing me ads for the house non stop and now it’s all I can think about. (This isn’t exactly the ad but, I can’t find that and this is close and wild.) No? Fine, let’s move on.
Heir Mail #21
Hello! You’re reading HeirMail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. Heirecommendation: this week I watched A New Leaf, Elaine May’s first film, on PlutoTV (you can find it OnDemand under ‘70s movies), because of the Blank Check episode about it and also because the plot is: Walter Matthau loses all his money and needs to marry (and for good measure murder) an heiress, played by Elaine herself.
Our mixed feelings about The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Aaron Sorkin, explained
This year, eight films are in the running for Best Picture, the most prestigious award at the Oscars. That’s a lot of movies to watch, analyze, and enjoy! So in the days before the ceremony on April 25, Vox staffers are looking at each of the nominees in turn. What makes this film appealing to Academy voters? What makes it emblematic of the year? And should it win?
Heir Mail #20, let's say.
Hello! You’re reading HeirMail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. We’re back! I swear Substack’s draft limit’s getting shorter? Might be the footnotes. This week, all (explicit) crimes are in the rest of the alert. There are too many crimes.
Heir Mail #18/19, somewhere in there
Hello! You’re reading HeirMail, the only newsletter to come from me (hi) setting a Google Alert for the word “heiress” and then just writing about whatever pops up. Hi hi hi! First, some mansekeeping: I’m officially moving this newsletter to an every-other-week schedule, now that it’s nice out and having a life feels possible. But about half the time I set an intention it turns out to not happen1 so probably don’t worry about it.
