LAKELAND - While not yet highly prevalent in Alberta, a new soil-borne illness is impacting canola producers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. According to the Canola Council of Canada, verticillium stripe is a fungus that causes leaves to yellow, early ripening, stunting, necrosis, and the shredding or striping of stem tissue in canola plants. It was first discovered in Manitoba in 2014 and has since been confirmed in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

LAKELAND - No new funding for municipal infrastructure is on the horizon, but a minister’s council will deliver recommendations for “new tools” by the end of the year. Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs Dan Williams announced the council on June 23, alongside representatives from the Mid-sized Cities Mayor’s Caucus, BILD Alberta Association, and the Association of Alberta Municipalities.

LAKELAND - While grain farmers are struggling to get crops in the ground, cattle producers are rejoicing at the improvement to pastureland. “We're talking about rejuvenating pasture and rejuvenating hay fields, and it looks like all we needed was a flood and it rejuvenates itself,” said Darrell Younghans, the chair of the County of St. Paul Ag Service Board. According to Younghans, there’s been much better regrowth on the grass than in previous years when water was scarce.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I lack the confidence in my abilities necessary to be a novelist. Journalism is my vocation, it's how I serve my community.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't write for free, or at least be selective about who you do it for. Talk to everyone. Acknowledge your biases.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Globe and Mail is consistently excellent for national stories and in depth coverage of particular issues.
