Artificial intelligence powered decoding of Plasmodium falciparum sporozoite motility patterns
Abstract Sporozoites (SPZ), the infective mosquito stage of Plasmodium falciparum malaria, are widely studied as therapeutic targets for antibodies either endogenously induced by vaccines or administered as exogenous monoclonal antibody treatment. The unicellular protozoa are highly motile and adapted to migrate through tissues, facilitating the transition from mosquito-based skin inoculation to the infection of hepatocytes in the liver.
Pre-clinical studies of Schistosoma mansoni vaccines: a scoping review
Abstract Background Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by infection with worms of genus Schistosoma including S. mansoni. Over 200 million people are infected, sterile immunity does not naturally develop, and no vaccine is available. A vaccine could be a critical tool to achieve control and elimination. Numerous candidates have been tested in pre-clinical models, but there is not yet an approved vaccine.

Abstract Malaria vaccines consisting of metabolically active Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) sporozoites can offer improved protection compared with currently deployed subunit vaccines. In a previous study, we demonstrated the superior protective efficacy of a three-dose regimen of late-arresting genetically attenuated parasites administered by mosquito bite (GA2-MB) compared with early-arresting counterparts (GA1-MB) against a homologous controlled human malaria infection.
