Letter: Standing tall and saying nothing
Recently, Gov. Mike Dunleavy stood behind President Trump as Trump made unkind remarks regarding Sen. Lisa Murkowski. I expect rudeness and disrespect from Trump, but I was embarrassed that Dunleavy said nothing, or at least did not look askance at the remarks. — Michael Archer, Anchorage • • • Have something on your mind? Poilievre, Legault cheer Canadiens at Bell Centre Game 4
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre caught the Habs fever. The Alberta born-and-raised politician shared a video Wednesday evening on X of himself wearing a Montreal Canadiens jersey, standing outside the Bell Centre ahead of Game 4 in the semifinal series against the Carolina Hurricanes. Standing beside him are Conservative Quebec MPs Jason Groleau, Pierre Paul-Hus and Gabriel Hardy, all wearing the team’s jersey. “We’re here to support les Habitants!” Poilievre exclaimed in French.

Letter: What’s the definition of hypocrisy again?
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is suing California to block new congressional districts, saying that the redistricting scheme is a “brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process.” This is absolutely disingenuous. Australia’s oldest crocodylian eggshell: insights into the reproductive paleoecology of mekosuchines
ABSTRACT Alongside large madtsoiid snakes, the largest known lizards, thylacoleonid marsupials and a range of other terrestrial carnivores, the now extinct mekosuchine crocodylians were significant predators during most of the Cenozoic in Australia. Although the skeletal fossil record for mekosuchines extends from the lower Eocene through the Quaternary, fossil evidence relating to their reproductive biology (e.g., eggshells, eggs, clutches, or nests) has been reported but not studied.
Pershing and the Devil Dogs
1. Raymond J. Tassin, Double Winners of The Medal of Honor (Lakeport, CA: Daring Books, 1986), 156. Tassin writes: “For his actions of 5–7 and 10 June Daly was recommended for a third Medal of Honor. But higher military authority didn’t think anyone should have three, so he received the second highest decoration, the Navy Cross, and the Distinguished Service Cross, and, from the French, the Medaille Mailitaire. General Pershing also offered him a battlefield commission, but he rejected it.” 2.
Letter: Will Trump throw Ukraine under the bus?
Will the United States throw our Ukrainian allies under the bus? If so, this will be he third time that we have negotiated without our ally at the table. First, we negotiated with the North Vietnamese without the South Vietnamese being involved. Then, we negotiated with the Taliban without the Afghanistan government. And how did that work out for us or our allies? Now, Trump is going to negotiate with Putin without Ukraine.
Full article: Early Eocene pelodryadid from the Tingamarra Local Fauna, Murgon, southeastern Queensland, Australia, and a new fossil calibration for molecular phylogenies of frogs
ABSTRACT The origins and evolution of Australian frogs are poorly understood. The modern Australian frog fauna is diverse and thought to be derived from South America and later from Asia, but its fossil record is relatively sparse. Molecular phylogenies have identified the early Eocene as a potentially important time for the dispersal of hylids into Australia from South America via Antarctica, as well as the diversification of Australia’s earliest frogs.
New Miocene frogs from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, north-western Queensland, and their palaeoecological implications
ABSTRACT The Riversleigh World Heritage fossil deposits in northwestern Queensland, Australia, preserve diverse vertebrate faunas spanning the last 25 million years. Fossil anurans have been recorded from Riversleigh’s Late Oligocene to Holocene deposits, but they remain understudied. Herein we describe fossil ilia that represent several new undescribed species of fossil frogs referable to the Australian native families Limnodynastidae and Pelodryadidae.
Parastacid (Decapoda, Parastacidae) fossil mandible remains from the Early Miocene, New Zealand
Abstract The fossil record of freshwater crayfish (infraorder Astacidea) is surprisingly sparse, comprising mostly trace fossils, some body fossils and rarely biogastroliths. The cephalic molar ridge on mandibles of the Gondwanan parastacids (Parastacidae) has a hard robust apatite layer that may well facilitate fossilization. We report the first identification of fossil freshwater crayfish based on fragments of the molar ridge from their mandibles.
LungGENIE: the lung gene-expression and network imputation engine - BMC Genomics
We used paired blood and lung RNAseq data from 347 individuals from GTEx to train LungGENIE. We identified 19,304 genes that were significantly predicted by LungGENIE (R2 ≥ 0.01 and false-discovery rate adjusted p-value < 0.05). The mean cross-validation imputation accuracy for significantly imputed genes was Pearson’s r = 0.25, with an interquartile range of 0.19 to 0.32.

Three new thylacinids (Marsupialia, Thylacinidae) from late Oligocene deposits of the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland
ABSTRACT New thylacinid species of Badjcinus, Nimbacinus, and Ngamalacinus are described from upper Oligocene deposits of the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland. Badjcinus timfaulkneri, Nimbacinus peterbridgei, and Ngamalacinus nigelmarveni are among the oldest thylacinids yet known and indicate an earlier diversification of the family than previously understood.
The Cofounder of Guernica on Free Speech and the Retraction of the Israel-Gaza Essay
The online magazine Guernica, which I co-founded twenty years ago, published an essay in March that sparked an uproar among readers, staff and media, both mainstream and social. A geometric morphometric analysis of variation in Australian frog ilia and taxonomic interpretations
1 INTRODUCTION Anurans, including both frogs and toads, possess a unique Bauplan in the structure of the pelvic girdle (Carroll, 2009; Duellman & Trueb, 1994; Gómez & Turazzini, 2016; Spinar, 1972; Trueb, 1973; Tyler, 1976). The anuran pelvis is made up of a series of specialized bones that articulate with the sacral vertebrae (Emerson, 1979; Přikryl et al., 2009; Rockova & Rocek, 2005).
A Deadly Dilemma
On 8 July 1968, U.S. Marine Corps Major General Ray G. Davis met privately with Lieutenant Colonel Archie Van Winkle on isolated Hill 689, about two miles west of the recently abandoned Marine combat base at Khe Sanh. Their conversation beside a small dust-blown landing zone would be brief, largely because the hill was surrounded by hundreds of North Vietnamese Army (NVA) soldiers relentlessly trying to drive the Americans off.

Letter: Election law overhaul
Nine Republicans voted in the House to pass legislation changing rules certifying presidential elections as a result of the Jan. 6, 2021, attempt to thwart the citizens’ will. All nine will not be returning to Congress because of losing a primary or retiring. It’s revealing that they now can vote their conscience and do what’s right for our country instead of being beholden to the extremists in the party. Maybe term limits would allow more senators and representatives to vote their conscience?
A swan-sized fossil anatid (Aves: Anatidae) from the early Miocene St Bathans Fauna of New Zealand
Skip to main content Skip to main navigation menu Skip to site footer Abstract A large fossil anserine-like anatid (Aves, Anatidae, Notochen bannockburnensis gen. et sp. nov.) is described based on a distal humerus from the lower Bannockburn Formation, early Miocene (19–16 Ma), St Bathans Fauna from New Zealand. Its morphology and size suggest that this taxon represents an early swan rather than a goose. Extant anserines are split into Northern and Southern Hemisphere clades.
Vietnam: The Yankee Station View
Today, few people recall or know that the United States got into Vietnam through a backdoor labeled “Laos.” The U.S. Navy’s air war began in 1963 with “Yankee Team” reconnaissance flights launched from Tonkin Gulf–based aircraft carriers. Nominally supporting the Laotian government in Vientiane, Washington approved overflights to track the antigovernment Pathet Lao movement, which was allied with Hanoi. The Laotian Communists resented being scrutinized and expressed their displeasure with gunfire.

Letter: Punish Trump
I am a hopeful Republican who needs our party to return to a higher path. I have been voting Republican since 1968, up until Donald Trump. For many reasons, I thought he was the wrong person for our country and was proven right after four years.I am a Vietnam veteran who took an oath upon entering the Army “to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. ...” I did not take this oath lightly. Letter: Invoke Amendment 25
Donald Trump has reached the high bar of “high crimes and misdemeanors.” He is the one person who is responsible for all of the discord in our country. The unfortunate loss of life in the Capitol is laid at Trump’s feet. Maybe now is the time to invoke the 25th Amendment. — Michael Terrance Archer Anchorage Have something on your mind? Letter: Embarrassed Republican
As a lifelong Republican, I have never been more embarrassed for my party and my country. I find it unfathomable that reasonable and conscientious Republicans continue to support this President after a long list of abysmal comments and actions. As a Vietnam veteran, I categorically object to his disrespectful treatment of our armed services; from his comments regarding John McCain to his disparaging remarks about the fallen at Belleau Wood and Normandy.

A new family of diprotodontian marsupials from the latest Oligocene of Australia and the evolution of wombats, koalas, and their relatives (Vombatiformes)
Abstract We describe the partial cranium and skeleton of a new diprotodontian marsupial from the late Oligocene (~26–25 Ma) Namba Formation of South Australia. This is one of the oldest Australian marsupial fossils known from an associated skeleton and it reveals previously unsuspected morphological diversity within Vombatiformes, the clade that includes wombats (Vombatidae), koalas (Phascolarctidae) and several extinct families.
Update on UK Government Furlough Scheme | Lexology
The Government scheme which has, since 1 March 2020, benefited over a million UK businesses who have made claims under the scheme, at a cost so far of 17.5 billion, helping 8.7million remain in work on furlough, is going to go through some significant changes. The scheme, which was originally set up for 3 months to the end of May was then extended by a month to the end of June. On 12 May the Government announced that it would be extended again until the 31 October 2020.
