What was your first job as a journalist?
At 16 I interviewed punk band Battalion of Saints in the back of their van at the fairgrounds in Salt Lake City.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Absolutely. I'm 46, so I was writing long before word processors, but I'll never go back...you can't make me go back!!
How is social media changing news?
News comes at a much quicker pace and, I feel, is much less reliable than it used to be. Social media has diminished journalism credibility.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Journalism should be an exercise in questioning the system. I still believe in journalists as the watchdogs of society.
What's your favorite social network?
I have a love/hate relationship with social media and try to limit my use of it. Having said that, my Facebook page is visited frequently.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't let the bastards grind you down.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I am every journalists nightmare in that I am the worst news consumer in the world. I avoid most US based news outlets and prefer BBC & CBC.
