Key points Untreated chronic pain among patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) is common and is associated with poor patient outcomes. In Canada, evidence-based treatments for chronic pain are often inaccessible for many people with a concurrent diagnosis of OUD, which may be a critical missed opportunity in efforts to reduce overdose rates and improve outcomes for those with OUD.

Discussion In this retrospective cohort study, we describe the timing and the proportion of patients sustaining SIs and reported on factors associated with mortality. The described cohort was severely injured, with hypoxic and hypotensive insults being more prevalent in the early phase of care.
