Abstract The Clarion-Clipperton Zone contains extensive beds of polymetallic nodules on the abyssal seafloor, with vast areas (~1.5 million km2) under license for deep-sea mining. Mining companies have proposed discharging excess waste generated during nodule extraction in the lower mesopelagic and upper bathypelagic zones, which are home to a unique faunal community including zooplankton and micronekton.

Storm causes widespread power outages in Aroostook County

The storm that brought high winds and rain to Maine overnight has left nearly 70 percent of Versant power customers in Aroostook County without electricity. A total of 24,386 customers in Aroostook were affected as of 5 a.m., according to Versant’s power outage map. The outages were throughout the County. Versant has a total of 34,957 customers in Aroostook. Versant reported 64,037 customers out statewide in its coverage area. It has 164,347 customers. The storm also brought heavy rain to the area.
