What we did: We reviewed scientific papers to look at what we know about using total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) for patients having emergency surgery. This uses drugs injected into a vein to keep people asleep during surgery rather than breathing anaesthetic gases. This study talks about how the medicines work, how doctors put patients to sleep quickly, what safety reports show and what problems happen when this method is not used properly.

ABSTRACT Introduction Remimazolam is a novel, ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine that enhances inhibitory transmission at the GABA-A receptor to produce sedation, anxiolysis, and amnesia. Its organ-independent metabolism by nonspecific tissue esterases enables rapid onset and offset. These characteristics make it particularly suited to high-risk populations where hemodynamic stability and predictable recovery are particularly important.
